Ive been asking around and the answers Ive gotten back have been all over the map. I got this picture of this buck behind my house. Never seen him before. And in 4 months its the only DAYTIME picture Ive had of a buck out of THOUSANDS of pictures.

All is cool until you notice the GIANT BLACK HOLE IN HIS SIDE!!!

And then when you add up the rest of the details its gets weirder..
83 degrees out at the time of the picture (too hot for bucks to be RUNNING around) Also no daytime movement to date.
End of September (not chasing does yet)
    He looks completely gassed
    Panicked look to him

Havent seen him since the picture. I guess it could be an old archery or gunshot wound? but would it be so perfectly round?
If it was some type of infection or wound it would be leaking downward?
We do have Mountain Lions around but I wouldn’t think that a Lion attack would leave such a perfect area of destruction?

What do you guys think about this? STRANGE STUFF!!

He appears to have some damage on his right side also, a little in front of the hole on the left side. I am guessing that it was either a Cougar(the hole on the left is right about where the paw would be when they attach from behind) or he was shot on the right side and the hole on the left is the exit would, which is normally larger with firearm. Shot high on the right side and larger exit would on the left seem the most reasonable for me. You can see what might be the entry wound on the deer’s right just under his left ear. That shot placement would be too high to hit any vitals. Just a thought.

Its a chunk out of his rear quarter. Your picture is a bit of double exposure when you look at the back end follow the legs up you can see that nothing lines up correctly. Looks like something bit him the butt

Looks like he’s tired from rubbing. His antlers are wrapped in vines and plants. I don’t see anything on his right side. Sticker are you looking at his left ear that is turned back? I kind of looks like a patch of missing hair, but it’s definitely his ear.

Are you in an area that has epizootic hemorrhagic disease?

I’ve seen a few deer in northern WI with the same. Unfortunately, a predator attck. Most likely dead by now or major infection

Good call, I was looking at his ear, but thought it was a patch of missing hair, now that you mention it, it’s the white inside of his ear doah Maybe I should just stay off the web for today, that’s my second major bumble today.
