I’m not sure how many here know Tom Sawvell. Tom use to be rather active on here, but seems to have taken a break. I still follow and Chat with Tom on facebook. He recently made a post with pictures of some of the incredible plastic baits that he makes. I reached out to Tom to see if he would be willing to sell me a few. Being the Great Guy he is he wiped some up and got them off in the mail to me. I’ve been waiting for a chance to get out on the open water and give them a try. Needless to say they have been the hot bait so far the last few outings. Got a nice 14.25″ Beast on one yesterday. One of the larger Crappies I’ve caught in a few years. Here is a picture of the fish. Not the actual plastic from Tom but pretty close. Fishing the plastic on a really light jig head has been Key ( I’m using 1/80th oz )

I think with a few warm days the Crappie bite is going to really take off. The current forecast is finally showing a nice run of mid 60’s and even a 70 so looks like we have finally turned the corner. I think with the crazy spring we’ve had the spawn may take place and be over much quicker than normal.

Nicely done! I miss Tom on here, he was a wealth of knowledge. I thought he got on someone’s naughty list and never came back?

Thumper, are you casting or using them under a float?

We always fish them under a bobber. You need the weight to cast them a decent distance. Keeping a distance from the school has been Key.

I may have to hit up Tom’s favorite lake Zumbro and try it soon. Are you finding them adjacent to their wintering holes or have they pushed shallow yet?

All the fish we are finding are still staging in deeper water 15-18 Ft. near spawning areas. Hopefully with the warmer temps in the forecast the fish will start to push shallower. Water temps were still only 44 Deg. out there yesterday. Even shallow back bays were only around 46 Deg.

Thanks! It’s going to take a couple weeks probably with temps still in the mid 40’s?
