GoPro's, are they worth it?

I bought one of the GoPro Sessions about 6 months ago. The Session is on the lower end of the cost scale for a GoPro and I would say it is worth every penny. If you take a few minutes and learn some of the features available on the camera it makes the editing process much easier. Like for example while the camera is running there is an option to tag portions of your video. If you simple push one of the two buttons on the camera it creates a marker on your video that makes finding and editing the parts you want much easier and faster.

I take mine with me every time I hit the lake and am considering getting a second one.

Like others have said there is a learning curve but like anything else the more you learn about it the more you get out of it.

I would tell anyone that is considering getting a camera to go for it. There are a lot of very reasonable cameras on the market (including GoPros) that one could get to try it out and still not have a huge investment into. In case it doesn’t end up interesting you in the end.

I think filler drone footage will always be interesting shots. Most drone views are going to be pretty unique, in the case of fishing, unique to the body of water/area you are fishing. Compare that to POV angle or footage from the boat. It’s all pretty much the same landscape, certainly not as unique as most drone footage. Plus, any time you film from a different perspective, it never goes out of style just because we aren’t watching something from eye level, an angle we are almost always at 3-6′ off the ground. That’s why when I take pictures a lot of the time I get down on the ground, take macro shots or whatever just to make it more interesting to the viewer.

Thanks for the input everyone, I think I am going to pull the trigger and get one. My daughter is young and I look forward to taking some good footage and editing videos for her to watch when she is older.

I am undecided between the Sessions or the Black, but I will pick up one of them with my Cabela’s points during black Friday.

I was looking at the Session as well but I got a regular because you can buy spare batteries for it. I don’t believe you can with the Session, and you will find out that you will want spare batteries if you plan on filming a whole fishing outing. Also, if you plan on hearing anything decently purchase a mic for it as well. Plugs into the charging port and you can find decent ones for around $20-30.

I think I am going to go with the Black over the session, I don’t like that you can’t replace the batter after it’s service life. and with Cabela’s black Friday deal, its only $50 more.

thanks again everyone, have a great thanksgiving

I got one about 5 years ago and I use it a lot less than I thought I would. Initially I used it a lot and did a lot of cool videos, then my computer aged, and my free time dried up and my family expanded, and my hobbies turned elsewhere. Editing videos just isn’t possible for me anymore.

I do still use it for pictures, and I think it captures some amazing pictures. Putting it on the setting to constantly take 10 pictures a second or whatever has gotten us a few good family moments captured.

Well, I picked up the Hero 5 Black last week. Then I was in the Bargain cave today, and they had a returned Hero 5 black for $320 + 30% off + $30 off of $200 coupon. So now I have two…

Just wondering what others out there are using for editing the videos. I have Windows 10, I downloaded Quick and didn’t care for it because it seems limited.

Any recommendations for a good editing software, I am ok with paying some for a one time fee, but don’t want to have to pay monthly.

I use it. It’s very good and the reviews are all good too.

I use the regular gopro studio. Quick is for 30 sec or 1 min videos. You can download gopro studio from the gopro website for free. Has a lot of nice features and effects especially for a free editor. Pretty easy and quick to use once you get familiar with it. Search YouTube for tutorial videos to speed up the process.
