My buddy went last year. He had a ball! You can contact Roland Martins Resort or any of the area bait shops. They will have names for you.

Did that a couple years ago for a day. Had a guide out of Roland Martins resort. Can’t remember his name but they have a number of guides working out of there. Be aware they will recommend taking shiners and they cost $24. Per dozen not included in the guide fee. You can fish artificials if you don’t want to pay $125. for minnows.

That’s ridiculous. I would NEVER fish live bait there. Not because it wouldn’t work but where’s the fun in that? All that grass and pads and slop to fish? I would be frogging, punching, flipping all over that place! My favorite way to fish.

FWIW Okeechobee has a pretty famous spring shiner bite, have seen plenty of fishing shows and YT videos document that over the years, including Roland’s old TV show when I was a kid.

I went to Okeechobee last winter and was guided by Captain Mark Rogers (former FLW pro). Nice boat, good guy, knowledgeable. (239) 289-0136, (877) 211-2277. If you connect with him, ask him what body of water is biting best when you plan to be there – could be Okeechobee, or others in the area like Lake Istokpoga. Lots of chatter on the Big O about algae spraying, red tide, etc affecting fishing. He doesn’t work for the marinas on the lake, so he can give you the real scoop on O or wherever else is best when you are there.

Well if you are fishing big o for a fish of a lifetime, shiners will up your odds. Or it can save you from a really slow day.
