Good stretch of Upper St. Croix for easy August smallmouth canoe trip?

I want to take my 6 year old boy out for an easy canoe float this summer on the Upper St. Croix to go after smallmouth. I am looking for a 6 to 8 mile stretch with calm water and lots of fish. Can anybody recommend a good stretch? We will hire a local outfitter to run our shuttle.

Nelson’s landing down to hwy 70 would be my vote but it is not the flattest water.

They do shuttle on different stretches also. Soderbeck to hwy 70 would be flat water but would be a short float.

I don’t mind a few ripples as I am a fairly experienced whitewater paddler. But I want to fish more than navigate rapids. So I am looking for mostly flat with an occasional ripple.

If the water is at a decent flow you will be just fine up there then. High water I would either reschedule or float a different stretch. I don’t know that you can pick a bad stretch but some you need to cover some water in-between productive areas.

Yup, Nelson’s to 70 would be great.

I’ve floated 70 to Cty O/Ferry Landing. Norway Pt to Nelson is a nice stretch as well.

In lower flow times, be wary of a south wind blowing against the current. We’ve gone on some canoe trips up there that ended up being exhaustive paddling trips vs. leisurely float and fish trips.
