Shopko has their Big Buddy’s online for $99 and their Buddies for $79. My friend went into the store and got the same price. Just a heads up.

Just doing some checking and found that Walmart has the Buddies for $69.

Sunflower starting at half price of buddy and those actually stay running when someone sneezes.
I know… Safety

You can have those old Sunflower heaters. Way to many burnt cloths and fish house skins. I can put the buddy right against the skin and not hurt it at all. Try that with a sunflower heater and let me know how that ends up. I’ve had no problems keeping mine running unless outside and really windy
X2 Fishthumper, plus the headache I get from it sucking all the oxygen out of your shack and leaving CO2 behind, especially a small shack.
Yeah, all the guys who make all the noise about the Big Buddies “issues” either A) don’t follow directions when purchasing the proper hose/filter (if necessary for High pressure hose) B) don’t purge the line and wonder why it takes forever to light (simple solution, put a 1# cylinder on the other side) C) don’t bank their house or its full of melted holes from their previous sunflower heaters so the wind blows right through the shack.
I have never had an issue with mine. Works great, its safe, warm, and has a fan.
Menards has them for $79 right now and also a 11% rebate on them.
I as well have had zero problems with my Buddy Heater. I bring out the sunflower heater ONLY if it’s a day where the temp is ridiculously cold. Those days well below freezing, the buddy heater just doesn’t cut it.

Anybody else HATE those dern mail-in rebates at Menard’s?

They are a pain to a point but Im not going to give up free money. If you watch things close enough you can get them on sale and also the 11%.

Hmmm. I’ve never burnt anything except a cigarette when my lighter goes out… But I guess I’ve realized that hot things can burn other things and they should stay separated.
I run my sunflower on top a 20# tank. That sits behind me in my one man flip over sled. Talk about close quarters… Can be done without burning things or dying when done intelligently.
I’ve owned buddies, big buddies, and all the crap needed to run them. I’ll stick to the sunflower.
Menards also has the cooker/heat style on sale for $35 right now, almost bought one but my buddy is perfect with an insulated otter.
The buddy heater is to the McDonald’s coffee cup that says “contents may be hot”
Whereas
The sunflower is to the sizzling hot non labeled plate you get at a restaurant.. Or maybe just an unlabeled coffee cup.
They both put out btu’s

But only one will kill you with CO poisoning. 20 years ago when I first started really getting into ice fishing I couldn’t figure out why I always had a terrible headache and would throw up when I got home from a long day ice fishing. Turns out it was exposure to CO causing the issue. CO detectors were not common let alone using on in a portable. I replaced that heater with a buddy heater and never looked back.
Those damn sunflowers are loud too. Once I rid myself of the sunflower and the old vexilar I couldn’t believe how peaceful ice fishing was. It didn’t sound like a jet engine taking off (sunflower) or static on an old black and white tv (fl8).
Funny how I never changed anything else but the heater and no issues since. Hmm.
I guess I could say, gotta learn to read directions to properly operate a buddy heater too eh?

You lacked air exchange… That’s all.
Not rocket science
No its not rocket science. Replaced that POS sunflower with a big buddy and no problems since.
You can make all the excuses you want for those heaters but they are dangerous. Buddy heaters are not dangerous, the only trouble with them are people who cannot simply follow directions. Again, not rocket science.
I’m having a hard time figuring out your point captain musky, does your buddy heater somehow burn propane without creating co2? I love my big buddy, but you still need proper air exchange or it will shut off and/or you will start to get a headache.

So is a hammer, if you hit yourself with it…

Ha, just had a good chuckle at that. Very true.
I have used a standard buddy heater for almost 10 years. I have buttoned up my portable to keep heat in and have never had any issues with being lightheaded or sick. And have fished for many hours. It has always started great. Maybe I am lucky. I just ordered a Big Buddy for the new portable.
My only complaint is if you bump one it turns off and has to be re ignited.

You will not get sick from one of the buddy heaters. The sunflowers on the other hand, you need to be very careful.
The buddy heaters if there is low o2 levels it will shut off.
In both units good air exchange is key. However, I do believe the buddy’s ceramic tiles get much hotter thus allowing for more complete burn of the LP than a sunflower. Thus allowing less carbon monoxide (CO) to accumulate than a sunflower. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a product of combustion, but not poisonous and doesn’t give you headaches.
There’s also a pretty big difference in btu output to consider too.
I’ve had a near death experience with a sunflower once before.
Cold night on mille lacs. First time using a new hub, an uninsulated clam command post… They sent an uninsulated on accident and I didn’t notice it until I set it up the first time on mille lacs.
Anyways because of the size I can my buddy heater and my sunflower that night.
Important to note there was zero wind that night (zero air exchange happening)
About 2am my buddy heater quit working and I couldn’t get it to start again… Ooh well, sunflower was keeping me warm enough… Till 4am when my sunflower shut off.
I woke up when the sunflower died (noise quit).
Couldn’t get any of my lighters to work… Until I stepped outside.
Then I realized there’s not enough oxygen in the house to sustain a lighter flame.
I got very very lucky.
I use a battery operated fan at all times now during overnights to blow fresh air in/out of the house.
I was swinging that hammer at my head that night…… Now I know how dangerous co is and I take two measures to avoid it. Air exchange and I use a co detector at nights too. Not a problem since that one lucky night.
The buddy heater should have been my first clue that night…
Whoa, we are lucky to still have you around! Scary deal for sure.
