Good or bad time to buy a truck?

For those with experience on dealerships….does location matter for warranty work?

For example I was thinking I’d like to buy from the dealer closest to my house, in the event of warranty work or anything else it would be easy to swap vehicles with my wife if I can’t get a loaner. The close dealer doesn’t have what I want but said they could maybe dealer-swap and get it

The truck I want is 30 miles away. Does it matter if I buy it at the further dealer or should I see if they can swap and buy it from the closer dealer?

It all depends. Forest lake offers a lifetime power train Warranty and then pine city doesn’t. But if forest lake gets the truck then they sell it to you, you can get there offer.

But as far as the forest lake dealerships, gmc and dodge I have had big problems with them both. Personally I’d never buy from them again.
I know you are close to them thats why i offer my opinion

I bought new at the end of May, it took my dealer 3 weeks to find what I wanted and I was not asking for much besides color.
Traded mine in and it sat for 2 weeks before someone paid over 7 grand for a 13 year old truck with 220,000 on it.
All i can say is good luck and I hope you find what your looking for.

I am in the long bed camp. I have a 2002 Silverado Extended cab with the rare 8 foot bed. I just couldn’t go down to the short bed at this point.

So even before the pandemic, I realized that in order to get a new truck with the long bed (GMC or Chevy), I was likely going to have to order with the dealer. And when you do that, I think you lose out on a lot of the rebates because you are not buying from the existing dealer stock.

I am kicking myself for not jumping on a used Denali with the long bed a few weeks ago. That thing was snapped up quickly.

As for leather, I am shocked at how much leather seats adds to the vehicle. I’ve looked at SUVs and trucks that were otherwised optioned out, but because they had cloth seats, the were several thousands less. Like multiple thousands.

Don’t quote me on this but I believe you are still eligible for rebates when you order from the manufacturer. Rebates are through the manufacturer usually not the dealer.

Also, you can still negotiate. Yea its less likely the dealer will want to offer you a deal because it’s less of a benefit to them but that doesnt negate your option to negotiate the price.

The location doesn’t matter, the dealership and their customer service after the sale is what you should be concerned about. I bought a brand new truck a year ago. I had some mechanical problems as well as a safety issue. They didn’t fix it the first time around and eventually told me to take it somewhere else for service and they refused to service it anymore. Even though I purchased an extended warranty through them. The manufacturer was no help either.

Been there done that. Next vehicle was bought from different dealer. Got a price and when they called to check if I was still interested told them stick it. Calling the manufacturer is a joke.

Good to know. I looked a Ford a couple weeks ago and only saw like 6 over in Isanti but will search again this afternoon. I do want leather

When I was shopping trucks last year one thing I found about ford was no matter where I went/ what I did it was always more cost-effective to do leather aftermarket than finding the package I want with factory leather.

Aftermarket leather runs around $1k for just about any truck on the market. There are a few places around town that do it.

I did this with my truck and even got ram emblems stitched in to the head rest and matching blue stitching for 1250 out the door

I ended up getting another LTZ silverado and I dislike the newer leather. My 2010 LTZ had a supple, nice leather. This 2016 stuff feels fake (probably is). I didn’t have any cracks in my 2010 leather after 245k miles. My 2016 is tarting to crack on the driver side at 80k. I’ll be taking it somewhere in another year or so to get the leather re-done aftermarket. I also want a dark brown or black but I ended up with the light tan leather.

Where did you get yours done?

I don’t think you are going to get much better service on warranty work from the dealer you bought from. This service work is how they stay in business and they are happy to service any vehicle. I doubt having bought there is going to give you any preference such as put you at the front of the line. Another reason to buy from a local place will be for any of the other deals such as free oil changes, etc.

Speaking about long bed vs short bed. A co-worker when I lived in the East coast bought a quad cab Tundra with a hard tonneau on the back. Talk about a non-functional truck. Short bed, no cap, hard tonneau that you couldn’t even roll back or easily remove in order to actually put anything in the bed and use it, you know, as an actual truck. Oh, and he never towed anything with it either. It was strictly a family hauler.

And THIS is why pickups are expensive and hard to find today. 20 years ago, trucks were bought by people who actually used them for their utility. Today, they are comfortable, high-riding family haulers or vehicles for big guys who want the extra room and comfort.

I’ll add safety. I want to be able to see a Prius thats i’m about to run over. I feel safer in a truck.

This Started after the war on oil. I bought my 03 duramax 4 door long box for next to nothing because diesel was 5 something a gallon.
That scare ended and every one bought trucks. Those couple years after turned mini van people in to truck people and every one complained they couldn’t park a ” truck ” in a parking spot. Now we have 4 door trucks with short boxes, the only option I can find in a 8 ft is plain Jane work truck or a 80 grand truck. I miss all my old long boxes. Now you see these guys running tool boxes taking up the box and there shovels have to hang over the tail gate. I now have a ram with a 5ft7 box and I will NEVER make that mistake again

I actually just got a used truck. After 3 suburbans I ended up in a 07 silverado 1500 crew cab short box. Works for me

I’d like to take a Prius, put a big ol nasty black smoke belching Cummins diesel in it and every time another Prius drives 5 mph under the speed limit to force feed virtue signals on the half mile of cars stack up behind them I would get in front of the line, go 10 mph under the speed limit and belch as much smoke as possible.

Diesels no longer billow out smoke like they did 15 years ago with the diesel fuel now. I would like to see you get a Cummins in a Prius though. That should get about 40MPG. whistling

My dad is in the market to trade in his lease and lease another Silverado LTZ. He’s running into low inventory and high prices. He was able to get $15k off sticker price three years ago, and now he’s being offered $7K off by the same dealership, Gilleland Chev in St. Cloud.

This year, don’t expect to find discount upon discount upon discount, ’employee pricing’, etc. like in years with surplus inventory. If given the option, I would wait a year.

some pent up anger coming out in this thread. maybe some people didn’t get a chance to comment on the “lack of law on rural roads thread that went around last week”.

regarding guys who buy short box trucks – this is America. if a guy wants to buy a “jacked up minivan” with his money and use it to get groceries that’s his prerogative. If manufacturers seize on that trend and raise prices tough sh!t.

Im sure the suburban dad with the golf clubs in the back of his crew cab would get pissed at seeing the rising price of boats which can be directly attributed to many of us on this forum

Didn’t see to much anger, more so complaining on the worthlessness of a tiny box and then how impossible it is to find a long box.

Bed size is also working against me. I want a 6.5ft box but almost all new trucks are short box

In my world that is a short box. Seems like the abundance of trucks end up in the city and they have to shorten them up to fit in parking spaces designed for a Prius. Try finding a crew cab long bed (8’) that isn’t just the stripped work model

I’m hoping to see this thread keep going to keep up on what’s happening as I may be needing a truck sooner than later. I had thought I was in a position where I could wait another year or so but a new issue may have put me in a position to buy a new one or put some money into this one and I wanted to get newer anyway.

Drove through a dealership parking lot today and saw only 2020’s (not sure when the 2021 model years come out) and man were they pricey. My big point of interest has been when I’ve seen dealerships advertise 0% financing for people with good credit. If that’s still going on I could maybe stomach the lack of rebates, etc.
