$300… Not bad at all ! My wife would ride along all the time… the courses are so gorgeous, she was snapping pics and smelling flowers constantly. She gladly paid the $35 rider fee !
They are pretty evenly expensive imo, unless you have a small boat and fish close to home most of the time. When I had my boat it was usually $100 in gas, minnows and snacks/drinks before I hit the water. And golf or fishing trips out of state are much more expensive, obviously.
I will agree to some extent but the big difference is a lot of purchases for fishing are for assets that retain value (boats/trailers, tow vehicles, electronics, augers, fish houses, heaters, even rods/reels to some extent) whereas with golf, pretty much all of your cash outlays (i.e. green fees) are expenses (not assets) and do not retain any value. Other than your clubs, pretty much everything you spend on golf is a sunk cost. With fishing/hunting, you at least some of the assets retain value and you can recoup some of your investment by selling them.
It’s called enjoying life. I would say 99percent do it for the enjoyment of it and not what the balance sheet may look like at the end of it. Neither are a cheap hobby.
Good grief.
When they start selling golf licenses.. that’s where I draw the line !!!
Rip, did I pee in your cheerios or something? I swear you come at me with a snarky remark every chance you get.
All I was trying to get across is that balance is important in life, especially when it comes to finances and your wants. Sure I’d love to spend money like there’s no tomorrow so I can ‘enjoy life’ but I also try to be responsible with my finances so I can get retire when I want to… and golf is too expensive for my likings. God forbid someone has a different opinion than you…
I love golfing. I played in a league every week at Loggers Trail in Stillwater for about 7 years before my kids were born. Then I bought my boat and most of my golfing turned into fishing. This winter the needle has gone back to golf. A really nice indoor simulator place opened up about a block from my house in December and I’ve been hanging out there most of the winter. Hoping to do a little more golfing this year along with fishing.
I do? Guess I didn’t notice. I just found it humorous comparing golf to fishing as a hobby and using expenses vs assets to compare which is more expensive.
I guess you just happened to be the one that wrote it.
No problems with others opinions. Life’s too short to worry about what others think of me.
Spend money on experiences, not stuff. Life is short enjoy it while you can. Like for example don’t waste precious time posting in topics about activities you don’t care for just to say you don’t care for them
Anyone own a simulator? At some point I hope to have one in my garage or shed someday.
A friend/neighbor where I used to live had one in their basement. It was sweet. Hope competition drives prices down.

riiiiiight… your first post in this thread is about wasting time and nothing about golf. Love the irony there.

Not yet, but when I rebuild my garage the plan is to put one in. May as well get some exercise when I drink beer.

I would love one, but this new place by my house is so close it might as well be my garage. He gives our neighborhood a sweet deal on the hourly rate too. It’s a Trackman sim and I’ve found it to be the most accurate sim I’ve played on.
wow, those pics from Hawaii are gorgeous!
we are heading down to Missouri next week Friday to get a jump on the season.
Payne’s Valley on Saturday, then 4 1/2 rounds in Lake of the Ozarks.
can’t wait!
Just got back from the Divider Cup weekend. This is a fun Ryder Cup style tourney my buddy puts on. He’s from Milwaukee, but went to the U and has lived in MN since, so it’s a mix of Wisconsin and MN guys. Tons of fun and problem solving for the world aka . Played in the Nekoosa, WI area, 18 at Bullseye Friday, 36 at Lake Arrowhead- The Pines Saturday, and 18 at Lake Arrowhead – The Lakes Sunday. I really liked all 3 courses, and the price was right at roughly $70/round. Friday we played in the rain the last 2-3 holes to complete the round. The funny thing is a group of 4 played Sand Valley (since that is right there as well), and they started a little later so only got like 12 holes in and are waiting to see if they get prorated correctly or what. It’s kind of a bigger deal when it’s $400+/round ($300 for golf, $100 for a caddy + tip and any food/drinks).
I golfed very inconsistent, had some great 5-9 hole stretches and the wheels fell off other times. I have gone from a 25 handicap to a 15, so I guess that’s to be expected. Last round started brutal (and not feeling great) and shot a 57, and then came home on the back 9 with a 45 and even par on the last 5 holes. Weird game, but that’s the beauty in it I guess. Also, I hate to say it as a Vikes fan but the more time I spend in Wisconsin, the more I like it!
Sound like a blast BigWerm.Usely get one tourney in a summer but sure I will this summer. Just picked up some new irons and wow it’s different from my 30 year old clubs.
I love western WI area i’m looking at places over there. Pick up lifetime licenses before I make the move
Bigwerm – Sounds like a fun outing with friends. That’s a lot of golf in one weekend. Good job in getting your handicap down 10 strokes. Weird game is a great description. Its crazy how much a persons game can change from day to day or even during a day. Even the top pro’s have ups and downs from week to week or daily. got a tee time at 5:20 at blackberry ridge this evening. Had a poor outing on Friday so looking forward to improving on that outing. I think I shot a even 100. My goal is to shoot a 90 or under this year. I believe a 93 is my best so far. Just need all the parts of the game to be on on the same day for once.
I think Sand Valley looks like a beast, but wow. Nowadays I’m pretty happy with bogey golf, shooting 90 or better.

New irons is next on my list. I’m open to suggestions, but will probably just do a fitting at 2nd swing to see what I like best. Making the move elsewhere is increasingly tempting to me too.

Same here, and I have a few rounds under 90 this year. Those famous courses are beautiful and well kept, but they are designed for golfers far better than me, and would result in getting beat up by it quite a bit I think. Also, a big overlooked factor in scoring well is familiarity, all my best rounds have come on courses I know well. This weekend first time playing Lake Arrowhead – The Pines course greens were extremely tough, until you realized it was FAR more important to be under the pin, than closer to it on the side or over it. Number of putts went down drastically in the second 18.
What is a golf handicap?
If someone says they have a 6 handicap,
what does that mean?
Bigwerm check out Lake Arrowhead near Wisconsin Rapids, WI. Has two nice courses that are pretty friendly. Lakes and Pines. Not going to break the bank. If you have a large budget located right across the street is Sand Valley. They have three golf courses. Sand Valley is owned by same company as Bandon Dunes and is a nation wide destination. Have to walk though… But Lake Arrowhead I think your group would enjoy.
Plus Lake Petenwell and Castle Rock are right there if you want to add in some fishing too…

It is stupidly complicated imo, but basically it means how many shots over par you would be in your best round. So a 6 handicap is expected to shoot a 78 at best on a par 72 course.

Scroll up a little further, Lake Arrowhead is where we were!

The lower your handicap, the better you are. Its an average of all your rounds combined over par. Most golf leagues you need an established handicap and strokes will be given out if the handicaps are uneven amongst competitiors.
The average amateur American golfer is about an 18 handicap (which IMO is pretty terrible). Some golfers don’t have a handicap because their average is even par or better. Those are called scratch golfers.
Generally speaking, the more you play, the better your handicap should be. When I was at my peak in HS, my handicap was just under 3 (for 9 holes). My Father plays golf about 4 times/week and his handicap is 3. He’s turns 73 later this month. Pretty freaking good for a 73 year old.
I subbed one night in the Sartell Men’s league… subs without a club handicap are automatically an 8… I was paired against 1980 Olympian Hockey Player John Harrington… I believe he was a 12 handicap, I beat him by 2 strokes
Don’t play much at all but sure looks like a good year for course conditions, sure alot of luscious green everywhere I have come across in the metro.
