I’m wondering if anyone has heard or seen any toms gobble or strut yet in the twin Cities area. I’m also wondering if it is legal to call to turkeys before the season? Just thinking of trying in a non huntable spot.

I’ve seen some down here south of the cities. Both strutting and gobbling.

The real big groups I’ve seen on my route seem to have broken up into some smaller groups. Today I seen quite a few toms as loners.

In reading the regulations, so long as you are not carrying any bow, firearm, weapon or device that could be used to take a turkey, I can’t find anything that would prohibit calling to turkeys. To me, this activity would fall under the heading of bird watching.

However… In this busybody age where everyone with a cell phone thinks of themselves as some kind of cop on patrol, I’d say it is very likely (especially in the metro area) that you WILL be called in to the cops if anyone sees you. They’ll just assume you’re poaching and will probably embellish the report to include the fact that they “saw” you carrying a gun, poaching, etc, etc.

It’s this exact situation that keeps me from predator hunting at night, even though it is perfectly legal.

So now you’ve got a situation where law enforcement has been lied to by a busybody that can’t mind their own business, but now they belive they’ve got a guy out in the woods with a gun poaching. Only bad things can happen if you see where I’m going with this. I’d be very, very, very careful and certainly carry an orange vest in your pocket so you can put it on and be highly visible should law enforcement get a false report and come in all amped up.

A friend and I fished on Weds morning for a while and on the ride home we took the scenic route [a gravel road] and saw several turkeys in a field with what appeared to be three fully fanned out.

Strutting and gobbling in Northeast Iowa. Heading out Friday this week through next Tuesday. Got the Benelli sighted in last night. Really liked Longbeard XR Magnum #6 3″ loads. Got a new Carlson choke and it patterned tight out to 40 yards, 50 yards, it opened up more, but would still go after one if that was all I got. Best of luck up north!
