Heading off to the Virgin Islands with the family in two weeks and my kids just informed me that I need to get them a Go Pro. So now that I have less than two weeks to shop I need advice on which model to get. Besides using it for this trip I will use it on the open water to capture that illusive giant muskie or on ice when eelpoutguy and I are are fishing the lighthouse gap on LOW.

At my local scheels it was pretty much the go pro hero or go pro hero 4. About a 200 dollar difference. If you can swing it the hero 4 is a much nicer unit as far as features go.

I used to sell them and own one. I got the Hero 4 silver. It is a much nicer camera than the 3+ silver and has a built in LCD screen on the back. Definitely worth the extra money! I used mine on my honeymoon in Greece and got some awesome footage. Also, I’ve found that the chest mount is the best for on your body during fishing, and the clamp mount is awesome for everything else. I clamp it to my net, boat, ice house, etc. I would also recommend getting extra batteries. If you have other questions, let me know, I should be able to answer them!

X2 on the clamp. That it a must have.

I’d also like a pole like a selfie stick Mount, but less for selfies and more for getting a better angle like when in a crowd for example. If you are at an attraction, people get in the way, but if you get the camera up high, its not as bad. It’s also good for dunking the camera underwater, because unless you are in the water, its awkward holding the camera which leads to shakey shots with bad angles.

I’ve seen so many first person point of view shots from body mounts that I am tired of it. I don’t find those videos very interesting, especially of fishing. I’d rather have the camera mounted and showing the person reeling the fish in and their reactions.

A friends daughter used a selfie stick when the family went to Europe and took a ton of selfie style videos. She then edited it and it was actually very nicely done. I believe she was a photographer or some creative field where she knew what she was doing. She filmed Tons of group selfies with lots of action and tourist attractions and stiched them all together with very short clips.

Hero 4. Which ever one you get make sure it has the display screen on the back to view your short videos so you don’t always have to plug it in.

Bring it up to LOTW this December and film me pulling a 29″er onto the ice.

I’d get the LCD on back too. I don’t have it, I have the Hero 3+ Silver. I end up having to frame shots with the app on my phone and that gets a bit clunky. And framing shots for me is a necessity usually because I am not a fan of the wide angle view, unless there is a lot of action or I have no choice because I can’t guarantee I am following the subject.

Anyone get the LCD attachment as opposed to the built in one? I am curious if it is a battery drain. I know the wifi is a drain on my Silver 3+ and I need that when I connect to my phone.

Suction cup mounts are prime. I’ve never used the clamps but the Suction is over-built and amazing, I tie a rope to it just for ease of mind. You can stick it to the outside of your boat looking forward you can get some pretty cool video. Stay away from mounting it to yourself, people move a ton, which gets overwhelming to people watching. Fixed positions always seems to be more enjoyable in my opinion. I haven’t followed much of gopro after the 3,which was a game changer having 1080p with 120fps (off the top of my head), which is awesome for slow motion stuff. I’d also recommend a external hard drive you can store all of your video on because they take up a ton of space and will slow your computer down. I probably used a tripod mount and the Suction cup mount the most and making a gopro pole is really easy too, and the are pretty fun.

I forgot to mention hand warmers for cold weather. I rubber band them onto the back of the camera to keep the batteries warm and keep extras in my pocket close to my body l to keep them warm. If they get cold, the life of them gets pretty pathetic.
