For my situation space prohibits having a third vehicle around. I’d just get another full size if we dont like the interior space once we climb in a mid size.

    I have a 2016 Colorado 4×4, 4 door,v6, 6 speed auto with towing package. I tow a Lund 1600 fury with a merc. 40 hp 4 stroke.
    Hwy I get 22-24 MPG; towing I get 19 to 20 MPG driving 55 to 60 MPH.
So far I put on 30,000 miles with no problems. The truck has served me well and there is plenty of room for my 6’4″ body.

Looking at pulling the trigger on a GMC Canyon soon. Definitely going with a crew cab, but on the fence with going long box or short box. Which size did you go with? If you went with the SB, do you feel you have enough space back there?

I went with the long box. Needed room for my Otter Cabin which just fits.

If you have a full-size now, I think over time you’re really going to miss it and become annoyed with going smaller. Look at how spacious crew cab seating is now and you won’t have that. When you can’t fit everything you want in the bed, you might have to tow a utility trailer, etc.

Think long and hard about it and I’d go to the car show and just sit in the Colorado/Canyon for a while and think about it. Stare long and hard in that bed.

The mid-size trucks have come a long way and are just as powerful and share other specs with the full-sizes of the early 2000s and before, but my point is that now that the full-sizes have improved so much, you are going to miss out on all of that. The biggest being is the roominess in the cab.

I have the long bed. It does effect turning radius some. It’s still easier to maneuver than the full size.

I drive a 2015 Colorado crew cab with a short box. Very nice driving and had no problem pulling 2 bigger jet skis two hours away. Get mid 20s mpg. There is still a good amount of room in the cab. Only complaint I have about them is in the winter you could describe them as an ice skate unless you get some weight in the box

Since the OP has a 2009, I tried to get a comparison as close to that as possible. Edmunds has a 2007 in their archive, so I used that, a current generation Colorado, and a 2019 Silverado.

The current Colorado’s are not small trucks, as the facts below show. These current mid-size are not the S-10’s and Rangers of the past.

Not everyone lives in the country, or has a 24’x24′ garage. I can certainly see a mid-size pickup in my garage in the future.

Such is the case with any pickup truck…

Are they pretty quick if you put it to the floor? (V6) Usually GM trucks are not slouches.
