General Motors is recalling more than 3.45 million of its large SUVs and trucks, including the 2015 to 2017 Cadillac Escalade, 2014 to 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, as well as 2015 to 2018 Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, and GMC Yukon for a braking issue, according to federal records.

I took my truck in not long after buying it and they told me I was crazy. When backing up my boat the brakes would get real ‘spongy’ and you’d have to push it through the floor to get it to stop.

    Yep… Had that issue…

I got the notice this spring that warranty for the vacuum pump was extended (didn’t apply as I had over 72k on it). That was the straw that broke the camel’s back for me and I got rid of the truck. I had the entire truck w/ boat, kid, and dogs inside rolling down a steep ramp and couldn’t stop it. Without an E-Brake it would have been in the drink.

Also, be mindful that if your vacuum pump is actually failing/self destructing, it’ll throw little metal shavings into your oil pump as well and engine(apparently how the oil lines are run). That’s a sore topic for me as well.

If you own a 2014 era Silverado, I’m sorry.

As someone who’s owned 4 different Chevy trucks, that thing was the biggest POS.

I’ll get off my soap box now.

So when was the last time GM didn’t have an issue with pickups?
1989-1997 Thermal 4×4 front axle actuators
    1993-? 4L60E trans failures
    1996-1999 CSFI injector issues
    1996-1998 intake manifold gasket failure
    1996-1997 soft distributor gears

Some of those made in the 2000’s have issues with the HVAC blower motor wiring melting. Sounds like some of the newer ones that shut off a couple cylinders have issues with the lifters

Not to forget the oil burning issues that the active fuel management 5.3 motors had.

I’m far from being a Chevy guy but with all do respect, every manufacture has issues…even my beloved tundra.

I have a 2007 Sierra that burns through 2 quarts of oil througout a 5000 mile run. is this the reason? its got the 5.3 liter vortec and I was wondering where the heck the oil was going. I assume it is leaking into the rings and burning up?

    Yep vehicles have problems.
Anyone with real knowledge of vehicles can make a list like that for every car and every manufacturer.
Also in my experience, distributor gears and AFM lifters fail due to poor maintenance/ lack of oil and oil changes.
For the record I have a 96 ford f150 with 266,000, and a GMC Sierra 1500 with 271,000. Both still reliable.
No matter the make, they break!

What are you running for oil?
I’ve had good luck running a synthetic blend instead of full synthetic and using a quality filter like a Wix/ Napa gold on 3000 mile intervals. Have seen oil consumption go down on more than one truck by going this route. The filter is very important in these engines as they have very sophisticated oiling systems compared to the older gen 5.3’s.
You’re correct in assuming your consumption could be piston ring related. Usually AFM lifters cause a misfire when they fail. I don’t believe they cause oil consumption.

I dont believe the 2007 5.3s were AFM engines so that wouldnt be your particular issue. What weight oil are you using? In the summer with the older vehicles I had I would always switch to heavier oil in the summer like a 10 30. Never had consumption like you are experiencing and had engines with well over 260,000 miles.

I recently switched over my 6.2 to high mileage semi syn with quart of Lucas stabilizer, oil pressure is better and burns less oil. Was hesitant to switch over but too many mechanics said it’d the way to go to not. So far so good.

2007 was the first year of AFM in GM 5.3’s, not all truck’s had it originally though. If it is an AFM do not deviate from the specified oil weight (5w30). If it’s not an AFM motor heavier oil in the summer is just fine.

Also was told on the 07-13 gm w the afm to have it deleted and it should help the oil burning issue…no clue if there s truth to that

Seen a brand new chevy with a head light out today. Ya know the one that makes you gag when you look at the front grill. AT LEAST! They are looking to get away from the tough look. coffee
