Gluten free restaurant

Does anyone on here have a gluten free diet, or live with someone who does? It can be quiet they challenge. My FW has Celiac disease (gluten free) as well as one of my daughters. This poses a challenge for eating out. Absolutely no wheat flour or by-product can touch their food. That would result in days of headaches, stomach cramps, and skin that can itch horribly.
So our anniversary is coming up and I’m looking to take the lady out for a nice dinner, and I’m always on the hunt for a new and exciting place to bring her. I live in Central MN, but will travel. If anyone knows of a true fine establishment that caters to folks needing gluten free meals, I’d love to hear some suggestions! Thanks to all.

I can’t name any in particular, but many of the restaurants in the twin cities serving good fresh food have numerous gluten free options on the menu. Most will have a “gf” next to the menu item. You can usually see this by viewing their menu online.

    I hope that helps some.

Not really a fancy place more of a trendy place the punch bowl social in St. Louis park’s west end has a number of gf foods. They even have gluten free fried chicken.
Depending on what your looking for its not very formal. Its newer and modern. Huge building they have a large restaurant area and theres also bowling and a classic arcade room all kinds of stuff.

I’m gf for health reasons. Eating out is difficult. Do you have a Biaggi’s near you. Our local one takes gf very seriously ,has a decent sized gf menu, and uses a devoted kitchen to prepare the food. I’ve never reacted when eating there. I know it’s a chain but it is pretty darned good in my opinion. Now if I could find a good gf beer.

Thanks guys, I may have to check out Biaggis, there is one in Maple Grove I see. Most places have gluten free options, but choices are limited. It’s always a bummer when a place says they have a gf menu, and when you look at it it’s mostly salads! So, hoping to find a place that maybe has a chef or full menu that will make her day.
Its hard to watch her give up so many foods she loved. This all happened about 8 years ago while pregnant. It was a huge swing in normal hormone levels and such that changed her bodies tolerance I guess.(not a doctor). Since then we’ve travelled around trying to find nice eateries for her.

Our oldest didn’t have celiac but was quite sensitive to it for years. Ended up being a weird rare infection in her upper intestine that was seen on a colonoscopy. After a few months was all cleared with antibiotics. I’ll try to look it up. Maybe worth asking about.

No doubt the metro offers quite a few and not surprisingly the closer you get to downtown (and the co-ops) the more there are.

If you’re looking for something a ratchet up from a chain restaurant, I might suggest Brasa. This list might help you though…

That’s a great list, Andy. Since I’m so hip and cool I’ve been to over half of those places. Most are south mpls so in my hood.

I agree that brasa is great. The Kenwood is awesome….best brunch in town. Hola Arepa is a great spot if you want something unique. Can’t go wrong with any of them.

Ps, I’m not real hip but my wife kinda is.

Now if I could find a good gf beer.

I think there are a few twin cities breweries advertising this. Burning Brothers is one – I don’t pay enough attention to the rest. Seems like a good niche market.

I just saw a FB post about this in one of the group pages and here’s what people have replied with so far for either GF restaurant or one with some GF options:

ZZQ Smokehouse, BitterSweet Bakery, Andiamo Italian Ristorante, Peppers and Fries in Minneapolis, and the Hy-Vee Market Grille inside most Hy-Vee stores.

Lakefront Brewery makes a pretty refreshing gf-certified Pilsner called New Grist.

I don’t know much about GF but I would suspect meat is GF. Try Fogo de Chão all the meat you can eat. Who needs anything else.

    Perch,

My wife has severe Celiac and we eat gluten free as a family so I know how difficult it can be.
Here are a few of places/foods that we like in no particular order:

As suggested Biaggi’s in Maple Grove is one of our favorites… The gluten free bread they bring at the beginning of the meal is excellent. I think it would make an excellent anniversary location.

Another great potential anniversary location that does gluten free well is called Main Street Farmer in St. Michael, MN. It is kinda of a trendy downtown sort of restaurant recently opened in the outer suburbs.

PF Chang’s has a good Gluten free selection for Asian Food.

Big Bowl noodle which has awesome Pad Thai… Noodles (the name of the chain) is actually pretty good as well for gluten free.

Erbert’s and Gerberts has the best gluten free sub sandwich’s and if we’re traveling and want to eat on the road we frequently stop in and pick some up on our way through St. Cloud.

The best gluten free pizza that we’ve had is at a place called the River Inn in Hanover, MN.

The cauliflower frozen pizzas that you can buy at Trader Joe’s are actually surprisingly good.

Coborn’s grocery stores also an excellent gluten free section.

All Zorbaz’s have good gluten free Tacos… Also there is a Taco joint in Clearwater called Taco Gringo that is excellent.

The best Mexican gluten free dish we’ve had are the enchiladas at a joint called Campaneros in Dorset, MN.

Bittersweet bakery is awesome in the South metro.

There is a lady who does her own gluten free baking over by Maple Lake I believe and also has satellites around the area where she does drop offs that my wife absolutely loves. I don’t remember the name but I can get it from my wife if interested.

The Buffalo Tap in Savage has the best gluten free burgers, fries, etc. One of our favorites even before Celiac.

D-Michael B’s in Albertville has awesome gluten free ribs.

Smashburger does great “fast food” gluten free burgers and fries.

I have celiac and agree with the previous suggestions. I’ll add Mad Jack’s bar and grill, Five Guys burgers and fries, Chipotle (burrito bowls) and for ultra fancy, big bucks: restaurant Alma in NE mpls (really good) and Spoon and Stable (never eaten there, but the chef has celiac as well, it’s impossible to get a table tho).

You guys are all awesome. Thanks for the help. Hopefully there’s others who have gotten some new ideas for places to go for their special diets. applause

Great thread. My wife also has celiac and it’s pretty severe too.

I know she had one of the best meals she’s ever had, EVER, at Bar La Grasa downtown MPLS, with her sister in law. Don’t recall if they have a specific gluten free menu but they accommodated very well and the leftovers I got were delicious. But beware, $$$$$! Good special date place.

We got our wedding cake from Bittersweet and it was fantastic, GF or otherwise. We stop in when we can when we’re in the cities for treats.

Pizza Luce does a pretty solid GF pizza.

There’s a chain called Boulder Tap House and there’s one in Moorhead where we used to live. They had a separate GF frier so she could get good GF restaurant fries, and their GF bread for their sandwiches was good too. Not sure where else those restaurants are located or if they participate too but something to keep in mind.

Omission Brewing specializes in beer crafted to remove gluten. They use an enzyme that precipitates the gluten out. I think it’s below something like 3 PPM gluten so depending on sensitivity might be ok. I know there’s other breweries doing this as well but can’t think of them off hand.

I’m following this closely as we’re always looking for new places to check out when we’re traveling.

    Keep the suggestions coming!

I love stouts and porters and haven’t had one in years. Just last weekend I found a good gf one from Glutenberg beers (out of Canada eh). Been drinking there other beers for quite sometime, but their stout just came out, and I’m digging it
