Glucosamine for Dogs

My yellow lab is almost 8 years old. She seems to be slowing down and doesn’t quite have the physical stamina in the field anymore.

I probably won’t be able to hunt her all day anymore. Unless I can get her back in shape and thinking about adding some Glucosamine or something else to give her a boost.

Anyone use this or any other suggestions?

I use glucosamine chews for my 12 year old yellow lab. Started using them last year based on advice from the vet. Supposed to help with joints. Just a couple simple chews in the dog food every day.

I can’t say whether it helps. I don’t know. I haven’t hunted my dog hard in years but she is still able to go at the age of 12 for half a day so I consider that a success given her age.

I’ve never allowed my dog to get over weight. I think that’s just as important to reduce stress on hips and joints.

I have a 9 year old lab. I started her on a dog food that has glucosamine in her food. She hunted hard when we were in South Dakota this past weekend. She has been a couch potato ever since.

Started my 9 yr old Setter on Cosequin last year. I’m still able to hunt him all day and he seems to have shown a improvement from last year. Last year I needed to give him Rimadahl before or after some longer hunts, but haven’t had to use it yet this year. That also could be due to keeping him in better off season shape, but agree it doesn’t hurt to try it.

I noticed a big improvement when I started giving them to my now 11 year old golden about 1.5 yrs ago. I was so impressed with the noticeable improvement with my older dog that I started them on my 2 year old golden right away and will do so for her entire life. I use cosequin

My breeder suggests to start them on it at 2 years old. I also use Cosequin.

Ok thanks guys. Probably pick some up today. Got more pheasants to chase this fall and would like to do something to help her out.

Our vet recommended Synovi G4 Dog Joint Supplement – glucosamine, manganese, green-lipped mussel, Boswellia serrata and turmeric. All are anti-inflamatories. We’ve had no issues with joints on our three Springers or current Cocker.

Lindy just now that it takes a good month or two before you’ll see improvement. It takes a while for a supplement like that to build up enough in the system. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see improvement week one.

We have been giving our older springer glucosamine since he was about 10. Definitely helped him the past few years. We were just giving him normal glucosamine/chondroitin for humnans from Costco since the vet said it was fine and way cheaper than the dog marketed stuff. I listened to this podcast last year and it has a bunch of pretty good info for older hunting dogs.
