We have been doing very well on gills the past few weeks. The last morning we were out we caught 9 fish over 9 inches and the biggest was just shy of 11. We have been fining fish anywhere from 10 to 17 FOW and had to down size to small small jigs.

Here is just two pics of the gills it is hard to take pics when you have a big school down there and you want to drop down and get another.

They are one of the best. We have some fish in the freezer now so we didn’t keep any but we could have kept a few 8-9 inchers if we wanted. Please only keep a few but let the big girls go and don’t keep limits out of one lake. If you want limits spread it over 2,3,or even 4 lakes. Keep 5 or so out of each lake to leave less of a foot print on the lakes. I should say all the fish we catch over 9.5 go back unless if someone wants to keep one to mount like my 11.5 there is no shame in keeping a fish of a life time to hang on the wall. Ya there is a lot of people who say you should have a replica, but that isn’t the only option.

Great message about not maxing out every day. Yes, there are many contributors to declining fish populations of all species in a wide variety of waters. Angler harvest is one of them. Which is why I think it’s great everytime someone talks about all the ones they put back. Until the DNR has no reason for their “TIP” line I’ll be happy to see messages like that whenever I can.

Who are you to tell me I shouldn’t keep a limit of gills from one lake? I’ll have you know that the 20 bluegill I keep every day of the week goes straight to the dinner table to feed my struggling family of 2. At the end of the day there isn’t a lot of cash flow to put food on the table. I’m working THIRTY hours a week trying to provide and my wife is putting in long half days every other week to try to get by.

We rely on those fish to live, money is tight, I have to rely on my dozen or so custom ice rods, my LX-9, and my strikemaster(or Ion if it’s early in the season) to provide for my family. Gas is cheap right now, but thanks to some tough luck(the X5 is in the shop), I’m forced to putz around town in my gas guzzling Ford Raptor. It doesn’t end there though, do you know how expensive it is to maintain my tracked up Polaris Ranger?

Check your privilege at the door Mr. Davis, some of us don’t have the luxury to pass up on keeping those fish.

I was starting to think that the local Facebook Ice fishing group had migrated over here…Until I picked up on the sarcasm. Nicely done. It gets tiring eating nothing but New York Strip steaks everyday, we need to change it up with limits of gills!

Nicely stated but you would probably do a little better if you had a Intermec CN51 Mobile Computers cell phone so you could utilize a good GPS system. There is probably some Gov. assistance you could get if your only working part time.

More importantly is where do I get this job for thirty hours a week to afford all of these nice and fancy pieces of equipment. I’m not liking these 40 hour weeks they suck I would rather like to spend more time fishing or hunting than working

    Next to weeds?

You can get fish in the weeds, but the big fish transitioned to deeper edges sunken humps or the next break after the weedline. Look for them in 15 feet down to 20ish with weeds near by. It is often where you find crappies first ice. Now late ice they will move back to the weedlines in 5 to 10 feet.

Big gills act different than little gills and in most lakes think humps at first ice anywhere from 8 to 17 feet and the deeper weed lines. Then they move out to the next breaks after the weed line breaks and they will be more on the edges of the humps. However If you are in a small lake this will change. Often in small lakes the bigger gills will be the first ones in the deep holes like 15-20ish and then the little ones will come join them and then the bigger gills will go back to the weed edge. Once again that is in small lakes that have a hole of less than 20 feet.
