Looking to see if anyone on here has successfully used the GI Bill and cares to share any experiences/advice.

    A little background:

I did a few online classes back in 2009 and then stopped when I got a promotion and didn’t have as much time to do schooling. The process/logjam of using the GI Bill was almost discouraging enough to not bother (much like VA healthcare). I was very surprised it was so damn hard just to get a benefit to kick in.

Fast forward to now and I’m facing a different job situation and I think it’s time I get going again with my college education, so I’m looking for any vets on here that have used the GI Bill before to see if there’s any advice or tips/tricks I can do to make that process better.

Nothing recent, but I used the VEAP program back in 89 to 91 ish and no problem using it going through an apprenticeship. I ended up with over $20k in monthly benefits and a lump sum check at the end because I didn’t exhaust it entirely.

My daughter’s boyfriend is currently using it to finish his college degree. He is getting roughly $1,200/month while in school. No Summer payments. He will not exhaust his benefit either but might save it for masters.

I would talk to your county VA Officer. He should be able to answer any questions you have.

Just like fishtoeat, I also used the VEAP/GI Bill back in the late 80’s with no problem. Also you could try your local congressman

Apply with ebenifits, don’t let the perception of a difficult application process keep you from your benifits.

There are different chapters of GI Bill, and I’m not sure if you are reserve or active component. As Whateverbites said, you will need to have an ebenefits account. I don’t recall what documents they need, but probably a NOBE (notice of basic eligibility) and DD214. As long as the military liason at your school is logging your hours and you are verifying your attendance in WAVE the money should be directly deposited within the first week of the month. I have usually found it beneficial to go meet face to face with the military rep at the school. Usually these people are great and will do whatever it takes to help veterans. Believe me, I am fully aware of the frustrations of navigating some of the veteran programs. But, you are entitled to these benefits and deserve them for your service. Keep on it and be patient. If you have questions you can send me a message, I helped a lot of the students in my guard unit navigate the educational programs.

Most colleges have a Veterans Affairs office. Talk to them.

I used every bit of my GI Bill education benefits and took the 24 year plan getting a degree while working full time and raising a family.
