Getting Rid of Moss Where New Grass Should Be Growing

I thatched my yard really well last fall and now all the bare spots that I was hoping grass would be growing in are now filled with moss. Is this just a simple case of weed killer or do I need to try something else? Its a very shady spot in the yard and with all the rain we’ve had I’m sure it holds lots of moisture.

Id just cultivate the area using a steel rake or something similar and seed it. You will likely have trouble getting seed to grow if its really shady however. Pick a seed meant for low sun.

That’s what I’ve done in previous years. I have shade grass that I will be putting down.

Soil test? Or just a Ph test (kit under $10). My guess is you need to lime it.

I don’t care for weeds, but moss is one thing I let go. Kinda like short green carpet, I like it.

Moss likes acidic soil. Rake in a little lime before seeding.

Iron sulfate will start damaging moss in a matter of hours and effectively kill it within two days.

“Non-chemical” methods are a) dish soap and water or b) vinegar and water.

I had a couple areas like that. Kept raking it out and re-seeding,adding topsoil, but new grass didn’t take, and moss would grow back.
Started to treat these areas by spreading lime pellets a couple times a year just before a forecasted rain, and saw gradual progress, first in moss stressing (yellows and dies) and then in grass growth. Might take you a couple years to see real progress. After grass was established pretty well, I only treated with lime each spring. A 40lb. bag goes for 6 bucks at Menards. Get the pellets, not the powder; the powder is a mess to spread. Doesn’t hurt to trim a few branches of shade trees if you can, to get a bit more sun in there too.

The Packers had to go to artificial turf to to prevent their cheerleaders from grazing at halftime.

I went and picked up some lime for my backyard because of this thread. I am going to go back and get some more today. It didn’t go as far as I thought it would. Just saying one may want to pick up more than what they need with lime being the same price as gas. The bag also suggests doing it at least 2 times a year until grass is established.
