For the spring Crappie bite. This is something I get excited for every year. I usually spend a week up north spending the entire days chasing them. Our cabin is on a channel that’s about a 1/2 mile long with great nooks and crannys to hit. Anxious to try out some new plastics from Crappie Tom!

The channel is loaded with all species performing their springtime ritual. I always enjoy going out at night with the big spotlight and and looking for big Walleyes. I’ve been doing this since I was a kid and get just as excited now as I did then.

Anybody else make an annual pilgrimage for big Crappies?

Past four years, I have driven down to Kentucky Lake to chase them. Getting away from work, and assuring myself of a little better weather. Usually do it the second week of April, as lakes around here are still not quite good to go yet. This year I may tempt it around here, figure I have a couple days to decide.

To me, there is nothing like the crappie tick…. I like chasing walleye and everything else for sure, but that crappie “tick” is something special. I also have a few of those plastics to try out. They sit here on my work desk… reminding me of the good times ahead.

We usually get frustrated pretty early on by the walleyes during the first two weeks of the season on the Chippewa Flowage near Hayward, WI, so we resort to our ol’ crappie “secret spots” where we typically do pretty well. It’s one of my favorite things to do in one of my favorite places. Just love seeing that slip bobber go down, and enjoying the camaraderie of being back out on the water with my buds.

I get to the Hayward area every winter for work… and always think how cool it would be to fish there. Sure seems like a beautiful area! Remote enough to get away from it all for sure. Having a few crappies tug on the line would make it even better.
