Not sure why that would show the need for a new TAX?

This is one lake, one weekend. This shows you just how many wheel houses are out there. DNR knows this too. They know they can make a LOT of money from this.

$15 for the license, $18 for the tabs… Have a license plate, and still need my fishing license number in 2″ letters somewhere. MN is all about redundancy..

I’m surprised they didn’t try sell this as an effort to deal with all of the garbage being left on the ice.

I haven’t registered my wheelhouse in about 4 years, never needed to. Only took it with on weekends and we never left…looks like the good ole days are gone.

Nope, just back to the way it used to be. I’m surprised they ever got rid of it.

Called the number from the DNR article to get the license. They did not know anything about it and transferred me to the MN DNR. The gentleman I spoke to said it is $38 for 1 year and $112 for a 3 year non-resident license. He also said it is best to place the sticker on the inside of the shack in the window and you also still need the 2” letters with name and address, DNR number, or I believe DL# on the shack. The code needed for non resident 1 year is 116 and the code for non-resident 3 year is 133.

I think the old wording wanted the dnr #s on the outside but I was told the inside of a window was ok. I’ll be putting both on the inside of the window unless I hear otherwise.

$16 is peanuts compared to how most anglers spend money on the hobby.

The state has to generate money to manage these resources. They’re gonna do it one way or another.

I agree it is peanuts but … Not to call you out on your comment but this is a dangerous way of thinking IMHO. I will not follow the leed of “they will generate tax dollars one way or another”. IMHO that is the reason we are so heavily taxed already.

Has ANYONE ever tried to run for office at any level to fight for what you believe in or just complain about it on the web?

I ran for class president once…that count?

I guess there are 100 senators and 435 congressmen at the federal level that ran for office and probably complained on the internet also. Just saying……

I’d say if you leave a house unattended it should need a license regardless of type. if occupied shouldn’t need one regardless of type. That’s my vote.

I agree 100% but then that would be way too much common sense involved….unfortunately!

The reason people oppose these new taxes (call them what they really are) is because the money just gets dumped into the general fund where it gets spent on staff and new office desks in St. Paul. If the DNR were to keep these funds separate and used on fisheries for stocking or ramp improvements not many would complain. If every person employed by the DNR hit the ice one weekend to do enforcement checks you would be amazed at how many times you would be checked.

They fail to understand that people just want some accountability to see where their money goes.

Again, I agree. What is the difference between a wheelhouse and sitting in a pickup truck watching tip ups? Will we need a new shelter license (tax) on our cars and trucks? It’s a slippery slope for sure.
    -J.

Really!! There’s a big difference. Fishing in your underwear, watching tv, while making a pizza is a lot different.
A lot of wheelhouses are nicer than most permanent shacks I’ve rented.
Complaining about a $16 shelter fee for a place you could live in all winter long.
Sound about like the guys that get mad when asked to leave Walmart. Using their restrooms and camping a week in the parking lot in $200,000 motor home.
I think it’s a good thing. I would gladly pay. Imagine how people feel with rentals having someone set up next to them, then leaving their garbage behind.
Also you can’t drink in a car or truck.

But we’re not heavily taxed compared to other developed nations. Look at the statistics. We are taxed very little and have a lot of spending power, which is why so many people have money to spend on luxurious wheelhouses pulled behind $50,000 trucks.

Um, actually, my dad told me that some CO’s would actually ticket you or warn you for using your vehicle as a shelter without a license. A shelter only needed 3 sides.

What else do you take off the road to fish would you like to put a License on?

How about a boat or a canoe?

Man, I know some of you guys aren’t youngsters so I can’t believe you don’t remember this. The DNR is simply bringing back a license requirement that they removed not so long ago.

In a month or two you’ll all be complaining that there’s not enough enforcement on the lakes. Good grief.

I’m thinking the increased pressure on the lakes due to the wonderful wheelhouse has put a little extra burden on the CO’s and the DNR.

Right on. Instead of a one year pass, maybe the DNR should treat it like a state park…which is also public, but charge wheel houses a $15/night fee to stay on a lake.

You should be happy it’s only $16 to spend unlimited nights on the beautiful lakes in MN.

Now there’s a novel idea. I like it. Then charge the same for the resorts that put the perms out. This would get the insanity under control in a hurry.

You’re right, we should also tax sun rises, birds chirping and those mornings the trees are white with frost. Especially if your thing cost more than my thing.

I honestly don’t mind the $16 tab, but to Dutch boys point, the percentage the DNR puts to enforcement is embarrassing. I don’t like poachers, drunks, or litter bugs on the lake. Very little of the DNR’s budget goes to enforcing the rules against these folks.

If my $16 a year will help enforcement great. Doubt it though.

UMMM! Resorts are already paying for it! Fish house rental license. Property taxes. Loss of rentals because people pull out wheelhouses in the spots they stayed at years before in a rental! The amount of rental shacks have gone way down! Never used to be that easy to go ice fishing for the weekend!
Far as on road/off road. I pay for my ATV and only use it for fishing. Trailer license to haul it.
I plan on building a permanent to do twice the work setting up then a wheel house. Maybe it should be half the price since it’s more work!

For those of you that are in favor of more taxes and that is exactly what this is.

Please forward your credit card info so I can pay for my new tax. Obviously you also believe in more redistribution of wealth since we are so under taxed.

You can get a DUI or DWI on the lake! Tough getting one in a wheelhouse!

Why would I stay home and drink when I can do so while fishing in an ice shack. Once I’m there and settled for the night, I start cracking open bottles. toast

My wheel house already has a license to roll down the road.

And its fine ON THE ROAD. Take it off the road to fish and its a whole new game, and one I agree with.

fishing out of a truck leaves when your done, fishing out of a wheel house and leaving it unintended or tended creats more possibilities of things going wrong thus a tax I believe in order. If one believes in a hike in a increase in a fishing liscens why not tax to protect our waters?

An unattended shelter has always been required to be licensed. The new rule is for attended or unattended wheelhouse.
