You might want to buy your fall hunting shells now. I just noticed my brand for Pheasant was available so I ordered a case to split with friends. I need to check on Grouse rounds next.

Good move. The loads I use for pheasant hunting have been hard to come by the last couple years. I’m very specific about what I use. I lucked out and found some online at Reed’s last January so I bought a few boxes. They were higher priced than they were before and I had to pay shipping, but at least I’m set for a couple seasons again now.

I actually just ordered 2 cases from Rogers yesterday. The price hurt some but I couldn’t find anything any cheaper locally.

How long do cases of shells last you guys? Man, I am still using the same box of Prairie Storm I bought like 5 years ago.

I just bought a case of shells from Rogers, best place to find hunting ammo. They go quick once the season approaches! After years of using Federal blue box, I tried Fiocchi and Rio last year with good results in my wicked wing…so I scored some Rio 3″ 2 shot…

I haven’t found a case of the ammo I prefer to use in a long time. I can only find individual boxes of 25.

I go through about 1.5 boxes every season. I hunt pheasants 7-10 times between mid November and the end of the season.

With today’s supply chain issues on certain types of ammo, if you see some, you better buy some. I actually heard of people having to cancel their hunt because they couldn’t find any ammo the last couple years.

With shells being so readily available in the past I never even considered buying by the case. I would just buy when I need. Now I find myself buying enough to cover two seasons ahead.

That is exactly how I operate too. I never had an issue finding what I used until the past couple of years.

It all depends, 7-10 days in Sask shooting waterfowl can burn up 3-4 cases if the snow geese want to play. A few trips chasing pheasants in South Dakota can burn up a case of upland load as well if the conditions are tuff.

Yeah, waterfowl hunting I could see blowing through a ton of shells in a hurry. I just never shoot much for upland hunting. I will have to buy more ammo now however since I have 2 boys who hunt with me sharing the shells I do currently have. I do regret telling my oldest to “shoot up” all the old ammo shooting clay pigeons with his friends a couple summers ago however LOL.

There was a couple days last November when I only used 2 shells per hunt. The bag limit on roosters is two, and I folded up my limit with one shot each. So ya, with a couple of well-placed shots, you don’t need much lol.

I use even less when I turkey hunt. If I’m lucky, a box of 10 will last a decade!

There was a day several years ago where I ran out of shells that I was carrying about 30 minutes into the hunt! LOL Birds were flying everywhere. Must have flushed 30 birds in one thicket and after I unloaded my gun, more would get up and I blasted away. I should have just put the gun down. It was not a banner shooting performance LOL

Haha. So if a zombie had shown up, you would have had to fight him off hand-to-hand then.

Dang right! My buddy was yelling at me why I wasnt shooting and I said “I ran out of shells!”. Of course the birds were all flushing by me instead of him when I was on the struggle bus.

one BOX has lasted you 5 years?? holy smokes, you must not pull the trigger much! I understand being selective on shots but I’d rather have them with me and not need them than not have them and wish I did.

where are you hunting? SD? MN? public or private? I’ve found public land birds in SD are very jumpy and flush early, so most of the time your only shot is a long one. If I think I can drop it, I have no problem pulling the trigger, even if its a long shot. That means I chew threw ammo quicker but hunting season is short and YOLO

MN, solely public land with the occasional private where I ask permission or WIA. I tend to not take long shots anymore. One of the buddies I hunt with will not even shoot at a bird that his dog doesnt point, which I think is a bit much, but long shots are just not something I care to do anymore. Either wound them or just waste shells. Im fine going home empty handed.

One of the elitist pointers… I know a guy like that. Good for him, more birds for the rest of us.

Remington Express 20 ga 7.5 shot. The green and yellow box. My old 1100 has always worked well with those.

I can understand it if the dog flushes it vs pointing because it could instill bad habits, but a wild flush is a bit ridiculous IMO.

I don’t usually take shots beyond 30 yards either. But I don’t flush many birds wildly because I’m super quiet and often hunting solo mission. My dog knows what to do. I use an IC choke all season.

Every time you shoot and miss, you educate that rooster. Same with a flock of waterfowl. I’d rather wait for closer, higher percentage shots. I’m fine with letting a few birds fly even if means a few less birds in the bag. Come to think of it, I didn’t lose a single cripple all last season.
