Have a 09 Reata 1850 that came with a HDS5 on dash and HDS7 on bow. Both have been replaced with new under warranty. The 5 got wet first year and the 7 a year or two after. The 5 is a Gen 1 and I THINK the 7 is Gen 2. Well the 5 on the dash has been acting up and I think I can replace that with my 7 in the dash(want a little larger on dash). So I want to get a new 9 on bow that will hook up to my Terrova. I have my 5 on dash hooked to rear Structuescan transducer now. Also to glassed in transducer. The new 9 will take the place of my 7 and be hooked up to Terrova tranducer. I can get a Gen2 9 for 950 bucks and a Gen3 9 for about 1600. What will the Gen 3 do for me on my Terrova that the Gen 2 won’t? Thanks!

russell marine has gen 3 9s for $1300. 2 buddies ordered from the site and are happy, I did not personally but will if I go with any new lowrances.

I would go gen 3 over the 2 as the touch screen is supposedly a lot better, more like your smart phone for zooming and other nice upgrades.

I’ve got a Gen 2 that I’m trying to sell for $900 if you decide to go that route. Bought new in September. I just decided I want a 12″ screen. I haven’t noticed any difference on the touch screen between the Gen2 and Gen3.

Thanks for the replies. Mainly wondering if the Chirp on the HDS3 will show things any better that the non-chirp HDS 2, both going thru my Terrova transducer.

I would go with the gen3 for a couple of reasons. The Chirp is worth it. The gen2 is on the way out and is not supported in the latest update. I just went thru Amazon and got a HDS 12 gen3 head unit(no transducer) for $1900.00 new full warranty. They also had the 9 gen3 for 1200.00. The gen3 is way better than the gen2. You can network your gen2 to the gen3 without any problems and the map cards should work. With the latest update you can do Sonar Chart mapping on the gen3 which makes it worth it.

Gen3 has Chirp built in and also has built in Wifi which basically allows the ability for the live mapping. These devices are going to be moving toward wifi and Bluetooth so its best to get in on that if possible because the older units are going to be left behind real soon. For some that isn’t a big deal but for those that like to get the most out of their chartplotters it gets spendy. -)
