I was just looking for some general knowledge. When fishing in a new area where do you start looking for all species of fish. Example: when searching for walleyes what type of structure do you look for? Or when fishing bluegills do you go to the deepest hole in the lake. I use the navionics app on my phone. Im not asking for secrets just a starting point. Thanks

It all depends on the type of lake and weather conditions, time of day and season.

The best way to learn is find someone to go out with who knows fishing. Ask questions about the body of water and don’t be afraid to make notes in your navionics app.

In broad general terms, if it’s new water I look for tight turns/drops into deep water adjacent to shallower weeds or flats for walleye. Bluegill…for me, their where I find them. Often deep water, especially off of points or mainlake rock/gravel piles, but good brushpiles or weedbeds can/will hold them year round, especially if adjacent to deep water.
But Alex is right, without some info on the type of water you’re fishing it’s a tough call to make. “Bowl” shaped lakes without much structure kick my butt…for them I drill lots and lots of holes and keep looking.

Generally, spring and fall the fish are shallow, either spawning or putting the feed bag on for the winter.Summer time weed edges and points close to deep water with inside turns on them will usually hold them.Really depends on fish species in the time of year and where the pray that there feeding on is located.
