Geese in Montana

Just got back from a 5 day trip to Montana to visit my son, his wife and their new baby. The drive across Montana had a lot more to offer than other trips we’ve made. Eastern Montana had a ton of geese in the fields. From Glendive to Billings the sky and the fields were full of geese. Just dark geese(Canadas) which was weird. I was hoping to see some snows. The lack of snow made an easy winter migration for a lot of geese this year. No snow at all, not even in the ditches. I was amazed at the amount of geese both on the way out and the way back. Also saw way more speed goats than we ever have and a lot more mulies. Makes for a fun drive when you have constant critters to watch.

Glad to hear lots of geese in eastern MT. Usually see lots of dark geese out there. Less light geese. I usually see more light geese in ND than eastern MT.
    Any ducks?
Also good to hear about speed goats. I’m always hoping those numbers increase. We used to get a buck tag for eastern MT that got you an option on two doe tags.
Whacking 3 goats > only one tag.
And those tags have gotten hard to get. Who doesn’t like testing bullets on antelope? Few things more fun to tip over and antelope backstrap, bbq’d very rare w an expensive bottle of 2010 Napa cab Is one of my favorite feasts.

I did see some mallards near the Colstrip exit on 94 but that was really it for ducks. That surprised me as I thought there would be more mixed in with the geese. They sure have it nice with the Yellowstone river staying open in spots all winter.
