Gas or Electric Golf Cart

Thinking about getting a golf cart for use at the lake. Biggest thing is hauling kids and their gear down to the beach, coolers, toys, fishing gear etc. I’d be looking for one with the rear seating and also folds to a platform.

Any opinions, pros or cons on gas vs electric?

I have a electric. Less maintenance on a gas and those batteries are crazy expensive.

My daughter bought a gas model used for $300 that supposedly needed a new clutch. The clutch would have cost a hundred and another hundred to install it but the shop started it up and cleaned a couple things on the fuel system and the clutch problem went away. So $400.00 bucks for a nice golf cart for her summer place.

Side note from my days working at a golf course way back when. You can alter the governor on a gas cart. Good times for all involved

Check out RJ’s Golf Carts in Red Wing. I’ve heard very good things about them mostly in pricing.

I’m looking around too…leaning towards gas.

Surprising the power my electric cart has. I’ve pulled around old wood docks, boats, and last weekend a fold out camper. Also pulled my 6 x 8 wood storage shed. It’s on skids but once I got it going the cart handled it fine.

Electric is more expensive to replace/maintain batteries. The trade off is that they are quieter, if that is something you prefer.

It seems to me that gas golf carts are pretty quiet anyway… definitely quieter than my 4 wheeler so I don’t think noise is an issue for me.

So…. Gas: obviously need to fill the gas tank now and then. Change oil once a year or every other year? I assume there is a starting battery? Need to charge that or just pull it out at year-end?

Electric: Plug in and charge the batteries daily? Or depending on use? Seems like they take 6 batteries or so and they are expensive to replace?

    Anything else I’m missing?

We have a gas golf cart at our land in WI and we like it. Nice to run about with stuff like you’re saying. Advantage of gas versus electric is that if you run out of gas for some reason you just have to walk back for the gas can, rather than finding an extension cord that will reach to wherever it died. Plus you dont need to worry about mainting the water level in the batteries with a gas golf cart.

We store it inside so as to avoid sun damage and exposure.

Lean towards gas for power and ease of troubleshooting…

I have an electric. I wanted a quiet cart so I could operate it at the resort early in the morning without waking the neighbors. I love the quiet but am not looking forward to replacing the batteries in a couple years. Now that the batts are in their fourth year they require more frequent charges.
