So, I just received this unit after ordering using money given to me for Christmas. I just spent an hour assembling the unit to the base. The instructions said to mount the gimbal bracket to the rear setting for the 6 & 7″ units so the bag will zip shut. So I did that, but then the power and sonar cables hit the battery and only allow you to have the angle of the unit set pretty much straight out and not viewable from a sitting position if placed on the floor. Then I disassembled and moved the bracket out so you can rotate the unit. But then the bag will not zip shut at all, not even close.

Why is it so difficult for companies to make something that will work for a fisherman? I bought a Lowrance ice kit years ago when they first came out to use my HDS5 from my boat. That system was chincy as heck and I ended up making a base and using a small Ram mount instead inside the bag and the bag only lasted a season.

I think I may return and get the boat version and buy the ice transducer and make my own shuttle.

I’m very disappointed that this was not thought through much better on Garmin’s part.

Didn’t notice if I mounted front or back but my can swivel and zips shut in the small Garmin bag no problem. Tilts back to the angle I like. You could always wrap the power chord around the handles and have one end come through the handles to back of unit and other right off the handle to battery side terminal.
    Love the unit so far.

The end of the connector right now rests right on top of the battery. If I force rotating upward, there will be a lot of strain on wire coming out. The battery should be moved back about 1/2″ and it would have been fine.

I will give Garmin a call tomorrow. Probably need the large bag instead of the small bag. Not sure why they give you the small bag incase you want to upgrade to the Panoptix and such down the road.

Don’t have that problem. I must have it further forward. I did what you were thinking and bought the SV version for my small boat. I pieced the ice kit together separately. I prefer a bag over a shuttle because I have always had a similar set up with my vexilar and hummingbird. Knock on wood never have broken either.

I heard that you can add some plastic spacers that raise it up and allow the cables to not interfere. If you’ve ever installed a tv wall mount bracket you likely have some spare spacers from the kit.

For you next build I would consider this company.

They seem to be be very thought out, durable, and somewhat flexible in the additional aftermarket things you can add.

Let us know what you end up doing.

So I called Garmin, they think it is OK to have it like this. So I guess I deal with it or return it. They sent the return info and form, but I think I may try it on the ice first this weekend and see from there which way I go.

I’m pretty sure you can spin the cradle bracket base around the other way and mount it which gives you a bit more room against the battery, this is how I have my Livescope cradle mounted. I would at least try this…

but back to my earlier point, alot of Panoptix bundle guys have used plastic riser washers under the cradle to raise it 1/2 inch or so which allows more angle and reduces the cable stress on the back.

Yep tried that, but the bag still does not want to close decent. The zipper rubs on the edge of the unit and scratches it up.
