Wanting to add a second unit to the boat.I have a helix 7 di 2d and gps. My question is i heard that the garmin sonar units are better. So can i run a Garmin and a bird on the same boat with the transducers right next to each other or do i half to pick one or the other im thinking about sticking with the Hummingbirds

I think you should stick with what you have brand wise if your happy with it. The supposedly better attributes of the other are negotiable in hindsight.

I have both and no problems with either one. Garmin’s are on mostly for panoptix but I heard the new SI transducer from garmin works as good if not better than the mega SI from humminbird.

Make sure you look close at the specs between the Garmin UHD and the Bird Mega.

    See Specs from their websites:

    Garmin UHD: RMS Watts 500
Ultra High-Definition ClearVü: 0.8 MHz, CHIRP range: 760-880 kHz,
    200′ Ultra High-Definition ClearVü
Ultra High-Definition SideVü: 1.2 MHz, CHIRP range: 1,060-1,170 kHz,
125′ to each side Ultra High-Definition SideVü, 250′ total, at a maximum
    depth of 30′

Bird Helix Mega SI: RMS Watts 1000
MEGA Down Imaging, MEGA 1.2 MHz (1.125-1.300 MHz), 125 ft (MEGA & 800 kHz)
MEGA Side Imaging, MEGA 1.2 MHz (1.125-1.300 MHz), 250 ft (MEGA & 800 kHz)

This thread is bout a year old. Has anyone done this? Can a person put the transducers side by side with no interference?

I have a humminbird now. It has glitches when I am in shallow water. They say it’s from hard bottoms.
Want to keep it for GPS and ice fishing.

I had a garmin before and I liked it want to add one back.

    Thanks

I am running both garmin and birds. Birds on the bow and bird for mapping and garmin for sonar on dash. The bird 2d sonar on the dash doesn’t work most of the time. It goes in and out.

Running two transducers at the same time can and usually will interfere with each other.

If you run them on different frequencies it will definitely help, but you’re best off just networking units and sharing one sounding.
