Garmin 106SV Cradle Ground

New to Garmin. Picked up a 106SV. What is the ground point at the back of the cradle for? Coming from Humminbirds that don’t have them I’m not sure what it’s purpose is. I want to be able to remove the whole cradle not just the head unit.

I did a search on here but it pulls results from the web vs just this site. Thanks.

Very few people hook those up. They are for grounding to the boat or neg terminal on battery. If you are getting lots of static interference they will be helpful or if your boating in a storm.
From Garmin support: Many of the Garmin devices have a chassis ground screw to help filter electrical interference. If needed, a marine-grade copper solid or stranded wire should be connected at the chassis ground and taken to the water ground.1

Bonding a marine device (chartplotters, sounder modules, etc.) using the device’s chassis ground provides some protection to the internal circuits and components from directly induced electrical currents.

Note: Bonding a marine device using the chassis grounding point may not stop or prevent damage caused by a lightning strike.

Thanks! I tried looking thru Garmin’s site, and the install manual doesn’t mention it. Makes sense but I don’t see much need in it. Far more troublesome things to worry about if I or the boat gets hit by lightning. Been “zapped” once by a close strike in the Everglades while holding the handle of a hand steered TM. Not fun.
