Garage door problem – convert a 7 foot door to an 8 foot?

I have a new garage under construction and I’m going from the 7-foot door to an 8 footer. I would like to reuse the door/track/opener as it’s all only 2 years old.

The 7 foot door had to be replaced only 2 years ago because the old door fell apart. So I don’t want to chuck this basically brand new door in the trash or sell it at a fire sale price. Can I reuse it?

It’s an aluminum insulated door with 21-inch panels. The current 7-foot version has 4 panels/sections.

Is this doable? I assume I’d need:
    – 1 additional door section.
    – Some kind of track extension? Or new track kit? Or what….
    – No idea about the opener. Are these things standard or is there a “long track” version that is needed when you have an 8+ foot door?

If you’re in the door biz, I would totally pay a consulting fee in cash/beer to help figure this out. Many thanks.

    Grouse,
Just for kicks, you should get a quote on a complete 8′ door w/tracks. My wife recently dented the bottom panel of our 4-section 7’x16′ door, so we decided to move the existing top section to the bottom, and have a new panel with windows installed. That 1 panel (with windows) cost me more than a complete door kit from HD or Menards (albeit, without windows).

About $1200 for the door. Installation not included. Kind of hoping for that kind of coin, the old door would be salvageable.

And I’m hoping I don’t have to replace the opener as well?

Thanks Bearcat, will call when we’re close to ready.

You might need an extension kit for the opener

    And for the tracks also

I figured as much. Can somebody throw out a link to an extension kit for tracks?

Perhaps you could reuse two panels of a 7′ door to make an 8′ door but add in the new track and spring and labor and it would probably cost close to the price of a new door. There is no 12″ section. You would have to buy 3×18″ sections. If that model doesn’t use 24″ sections for 8′ tall.

Opener “extensions” are model specific and that will probably cost more than half of a new opener with labor if it is possible at all. With some fiddling, a 7′ opener might open 7’6″ but that is kind of the upper limit.

I think our doors are eight weeks out so plan ahead.

Use it for a back door. A drive though to back yard if you can.
