Gander Mtn news

I received an email today from Gander Mtn and it states Camping World has bought the name and other assets at auction and will continue about 70 stores and internet sales. I like seeing competition out there in this and any product(s), as it compels companies to compete for our business in both price and service.

My mom and I were at the Lakeville Gander yesterday and the guy in line in front of us asked when their last day will be. The cashier replied that they’re just going to be under new management… not sure what exactly that means but I guess we will see!

I’m not saying Gander was the greatest store, but what I liked was having a variety of stores to choose from. I don’t like seeing the variety keep getting smaller on stores like this.

Sounds like it’s time to jump on any deals you may have been waiting on to go down further.

I was at the Woodbury store yesterday. Lots of junk, and certainly no deals. I was looking at a pair of Muck boots, Gander’s “clearance sale” price was higher than Cabela’s regular price for the same boots. We walked out empty handed.

From what I understand liquidators bought all of GM’s inventory nationwide and is controlling the sale prices. Once the inventory is gone, some of the stores will remain open (most likely under the name Gander Outdoors) but will be with new inventory and such.
It will be interesting to see how this all turns out.
Right now the only good deals are products that never go on sale and are normally sold at the MSRP. Otherwise the prices are not all that good if it was something that normal street price is lower than the MSRP as it appears the liquidators are working off that price.
For example I found some decent deals on Kuhl clothing as it is always sold at MSRP and hardly ever on sale.

Complete speculation, but sounds to me like either:

A.) the liquidators aren’t too worried about being left with inventory months after the transition is complete. (They’ll probably just use Amazon and sell it off online.)

    OR

B.) Gander set some contractual limits on how deeply the liquidators could discount some items. Nothing worse for your “new business” than having all your customers stock up on cheap merchandise weeks before you open?

I don’t know how much say Gander, or Camping World for that matter, would have since I believe the liquidators were bankruptcy court ordered.

Camping World is 4 steps down from where Gander was. This is not good news for the consumer.

Something we ALL need to keep in mind, the new owners have absolutely no say in how the liquidation sales are being conducted, it is up to a completely separate and non-affiliated liquidation firm. Camping world DID NOT buy any of the retail product, the liquidation firm did. I sure hope it doesn’t taint the name even more than it already is…I would like to see Gander Outdoors survive and thrive in the fishing industry.

I overheard an associate in a store last week say 12 weeks, which I think was in reference to how long the liquidation sale will last.

Interesting read, the new ceo sounds very down on guns and up on fishing tackle. While that will benefit myself I personally would like to see a balance of guns and fishing gear along with camping gear and much less clothes but I dont have 390 million on the line…

With Gunbroker as an option, I fail to see how any of the large retailers will be successful selling guns. Some gun shops that have gunsmith services will survive, but competing on price with online sellers is an uphill battle. I bought my last 10 of 11 guns on GB at prices you’ll never see in stores.

How can you say that when they haven’t opened a store yet?

Still need to pay to have it transferred…just wait for online selling to really take off, transfer fees will fall right inline and take off as well.

I found a guy that does transfers for $20, but otherwise you’re right, it can add $45 to the price pretty quickly. You also have to watch the shipping costs or it can eat any savings.

7 or so years ago I was paying $5 on a transfer at a home based FFL. Now I pay $15…prices tripled that fast…just wait once online selling gets even more popular. Someone will get your money somewhere along the line…it’s inevitable.

My local GM has signs up that the last gun sales will be June 25th and doors will close for good on June 28th. The next 3 weeks will be interesting on % off.

Here in SW Wis I could not find anyone or place to transfer a gun for less than 25 bucks. Bought the gun at a local hardware store. If bought online, shipping, transfer fee it was within $15. I’ll buy local for that and I can see and handle it first.

Walked throuh the Eau Claire store last week, was not impressed with prices for what I needed. Life jackets were a good deal but the didnt have the sizes we needed. Camping gear was maybe 15%. Not worth the no return policy. Ice fishing wad 50% but was picked over. Didnt shop for clothes

If they want to liquidate, they need to go 40% minimum to get me in the door as well. walked into the Rochester last week and everything I was interested in was only 20%….might as well go to Amazon for that

I think now they are saying that all stores will be closing. The ones that were going to stay open are just now starting to mark stuff down. The store in Champaign is supposed to be closing on on June 28th. They will probably start shipping remaining inventory to stores with later and later closing dates.

I was in the St. Cloud store today and they had a “now hiring” sign. Are some stores or all going to be converted to camping worlds?

More than likely they going to be reopening as Gander Outdoors. That is what happen to the Baxter one. Was at the Baxter store yesterday freaking packed! However, they’re still wasn’t any good deals in my opinion but their tackle selection was slim.

Surprised to hear the Woodbury store is staying — not at all surprised that it will be moved across 94 because that current location is terrible.
