Gander / Clam / Cabelas – EVA 'rigid' rod bags

Lots of great discussion on rod cases here on the board lately. I have an otter case and think its great – for the right applications. Often times its a bit too big and bulky for that quick afternoon trip out to the lake – where I am usually walking out. Plus, I have too many combos now with my walter rods taking up most of my otter case.

Looking for something a bit lighter/smaller, but something that has a bit more protection/rigid than the standard old rod bag.

These clam/cabelas/gander bags with the EVA rigid frame seem to be interesting and right up that alley. Anyone have any experience with one of these bags? Pros/Cons, how does it compare to a rod bag or a case like the otter (I have the otter, no need to tell me how great it is – ‘ ’nuff said.’)?

I believe the Clam and Cabelas Tundra are the same bag. The Gander is a couple inches shorter and will not fit a 36″ I believe. I bought the Cabelas Tundra and am very impressed with it. Was on sale at the time. The otter box was just too bulky for me. The Tundra is very well made with heavy duty zippers and carry strap. Would’ve bought the Clam also but didn’t like the color.

Saw one at Sheels that I thought was pretty nice. Didn’t pull the trigger and buy. Wished I had. Thought it was a little better/nicer than the Cabelas bag.

I just bought the double tundra from cabelas last week. The only downfall i saw was that when you pick the case up and put the shoulder strap on, the rods all fall to the bottom and you have a tangled mess when you open it.i bought a 10 foot piece of pvc and cut it down to 2 foot pieces and i slide the poles into those.they seem to velcro nice and tight into place and out solved my issues for right around 3 bucks. It still holds 8 rods and you don’t have to take the handles off like some cases I’ve seen.

I really like the Lakewood ice pole caddies. A bit expensive, but well designed and durable. I’ve never broke a rod in one, been using them for a good 10 years now. For a lot of trips I pack my walleye gear in one, and my noodles and quiversticks in the other.
