Dad used to always say that deer only move at night (in November) when the moon is full. Going into the rifle openor’ this weekend, does anyone have an opinion on this? It is going to be full this weekend…Thanks. RR

Its going to be the 8th of November, deer will pop up in places and at times you would never expect them to be in this time of year regardless of any trend or ‘normal’ behavior.

I don’t put as much weight into the moon phase as some do, but if I see any trend it would be later morning movement during a full moon, any maybe a slight pattern towards less evening movement (so long as there is not cloud cover). A warm spell (which we seem to usually get in early November (except this year) will drive deer nocturnal no doubt.

Couldn’t tell you what the moon was but of my last 5 bucks taken in the WI gun season, only 1 of them was during that traditional first or last 2 hours of daylight, the other 4 all in the in-between hours. (all on natural movement, not drives)

About the only thing you can count on as a guarantee with deer in November is that you can’t see/shoot them if your not out there.

Good stuff poomunk…I have a feeling 9am-11am may be gold this year based on your info and other stuff I just read on the web. Thanks man!

I’ve started to pay more attention to the moon in the last two years. However, bucks are more predictable in September, October, and December than November IMO. I wouldn’t worry about the moon with all the other hunters around. It’s going to be a brutal opener!! I will bet that the majority of hunters won’t make it past 9 am with the windchill, and will head in for breakfast. If you can find a ravine or a place that the deer will be to get away from the wind, you’ll see more deer.

There WILL move more deer movement at night and less during the day around a full moon. A new moon that coincides with the first week of November is the jackpot. Full moon during first week is not nearly as good. That said, deer will still move some during the day, but not nearly as much as when the moon is dark. As was previously stated, you gotta be there. I recommend all day sits now if you can hack it. It can happen at any time of the day right now.
