Just saw this. The swing bridge they’re talking about is just down river from the airport. “South Metro” is the Fire Department. Not good news.

“South Metro is aware of a train derailment that occurred on the swing bridge over the Mississippi River early Wednesday morning. This derailment resulted in the spill of approximately 3,500 gallons of fuel into the river. Union Pacific Railroad is working with private contractors, and state and federal officials to contain the spill. The river is currently closed to barge and other large boat traffic between South St. Paul and St. Paul. There is no public safety threat at this time. All media inquiries should be directed to Union Pacific.”

Well, that sucks! Wonder if the train ended up in the river?

Wonder where the fuel mass is right now?

Sounds like the Coast Guard has the whole river shut down all the way to Hastings. If the spill happened at 2AM the fuel could be a long way down river by now.

One drop is too much, but thankfully it was only the tank of a locomotive that got punctured and leaked. Had a bulk fuel tanker been punctured we’d be seeing 10x this amount.

    Here’s video of the scene.

From the video it looks like the bridge is currently under construction in the area where the derailment occurred. Likely due to the damage that occurred from the barge.

This is great…some guy named Walker Smith who is a spokesman for the MN PCA said that “oil floats on the surface of the water so it won’t harm the fish”.

OK Mr. Smith, I’m going to hand you a straw and then dump diesel fuel in your beer. Oil floats on beer so it should harm you either. Drink up!

I’ll be staying upstream for a while. Yuck. Seems like the bridge and tracks would’ve had to have passed inspection relatively recently with the barge accident and all.
