MPCA says a derailment led to fuel spill into St. Paul creek

    January 16, 2019 03:10 PM

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says a slight train derailment Tuesday night in St. Paul punctured a fuel tank and spilled 1,800 to 2,000 gallons of fuel into Battle Creek.

The MPCA spokesperson said the creek feeds into Pig’s Eye Lake, and some of the fuel got underneath the ice on the lake’s surface.

Sounds like they expect the fuel to evaporate. Not sure how that works under ice. Wouldn’t be 2000 gallons is a small amount against what is dumped into that river every day. Anyone ever notice the steady slick coming out of the culvert at the 494 landing? Nothing like dropping the boat into a oil slick or what ever it is.

“Slight derailment”. Wonder how that is different than a regular derailment? roll

Pigs eye is iced over. Little current to pull the spill to the river. Agree this would evaporate in the next few days. Also note that Pigs Eye Lake is one of the most polluted areas in the state. It’s where raw sewage and city garbage was dumped for decades.
