Fuel Gauge troubleshooting

My fuel gauge has never worked right so I attempted to fix it but hit a wall and am looking for opinions.

I started by powering up and saw the fuel gauge move so I proceeded to the sender. After shorting the old sender, the gauge pegged to full. I assumed the sender was the issue so I replaced. I reconnected the battery and powered up, and the gauge went to empty. Took a sip of beer, and a deep breath, then shorted the new sender and it pegged to full.

    What am I missing?

There’s a process you can do with a voltmeter if you Google. Can’t recall where it was, but might want to look into it.

I replaced my sender, same thing, replaced gauge and it worked. Not all gauges are universal. Got lucky and found one in CL for cheap.

As I recall now my ground wire I believe was chinky inside the connector. Redid all those as well. When I fix stuff I ultimately don’t know WTF I eventually did that worked bc its like well lets do this while we are here, then oh well lets do that, oh screwed that up now got to fix this and that, now what was I originally doing???

Less beer probably would help, but more beer makes it feel better toast

Did you replace and properly adjust the float arm as well?

The replacement sending unit was from the boat manufacturer? If not not all sending units have the same OHM resistance.
