I’m very much against it for several reasons that I won’t delve into here in order to avoid the inevitable flaming that results. I fully understand the reasoning behind it, but do not agree with the final decision.
One thing I would like to note, though, is that the Ontario studies that I have read suggest that the ultra-high minimum length limits do nothing to help the size structure of a population. There are so few fish that get that big, that it becomes insignificant to protect them fully. With the heavy release ethic in place among musky fisherman, this protection does nothing additional. With the occasional big fish cuaght incidently by ‘tourists’, the major factor in mortality becomes poor handling. These incidentals are mostly caught in the summer months when temps are up and the fish are vulnerable to mis-handling. Mandated release of these big fish often results in dead fish anyway.
