I spent a beautiful afternoon fishing for walleye on Vermillion with a good friend and a great guide, Jon Petruska. We started out off hoodoo point (tower) and headed out across big bay in search of walleyes at 3:15 pm, partly cloudy skies, to a spot 25-26 ft, 30-60 yrds off shore, where the walleye were feeding just off the bottom, using a slow jigging technique John showed me. The first tap was so light I reeled up the slack and waited for the bigger tap (that never came) (Im not much a fan of mono) PowerPro lets you feel everything but it was, none the less, a strike. (my minnow was gone). After 20 min. we rode to another spot (2 miles North) 46-48 ft of water, with a water temp. of 33, where the walleye seemed to be sitting a foot off the bottom, and feeding some what aggressively, we missed more than a few due to the light feel of a 14-16 inch walleye on mono 50 ft down, but caught enough to make up for the light bite, plus a jumbo perch that puts any perch to shame ive seen in years (besides tv). Kept a meals’ worth, and yes the jumbo perch, and headed back when the outside temp hit about 35 (5:30). Headed back to John’s for a quick walleye deep fry, then on home. John is an awesome guide, and a great guy all around. If your looking to fish Vermillion, and want to catch Muskie or walleye, I recommend http://www.reeltimeguiding.com.
