Well it won’t be long now!
Counting down the days until the opener here on Vermilion. Should be a post spawn bite, as we have had a very warm spring so far this year. Water temps in some of the traditional spawning areas have already risen into the mid 50’s.

I’ll be looking a little deeper or on adjacent points for my Walleyes this opener. I’m sure they’ll be a few stragglers that are still on the spawn however, the bulk of the Walleyes have already done the deed.

Good Luck on the Big Day!

Terry, seven of us(classmates from HS-it is our 20th year of being out of HS) are looking at going to Vermilion in June of 2007. Any suggestions for a place that doesn’t make you stay a week. We usually arrive on Wed. and leave on Father’s Day Sunday. Thanks.

The best place to try for a short stay would be Fortune Bay casino.
Otherwise you’ll just have to call the resorts and hope they have the weekend open.

Despite the cold rain and windy conditions, the walleye action was Hot on Vermilion. I had 9 people up for the weekend and everybody went home with a limit.

We caught most of our fish on slip bobbers, tipped with minnows in 5 to 8ft of water. Only one fish was taken deeper than 8ft, it came out of 18ft on a jig and minnow.

We also caught a few fish trolling in the same depth range on Sunday.
I was a little surprised that we had so many fish still in the shallows because of the early spring we had up here. I guess it just shows to go ya, just when you think you have them all figured out, they throw you a curve ball.

How did the rest of you do??

    Terry,
My family has a place up in the Northwest corner of Niles near Panichi’s place if you know him. We are just a bit further north of his place with the Warrior on the lift. Anyway, I had something come up and couldn’t go up for the weekend, but my Dad and brother caught plenty. However, most were in the slot which was pretty cool. They said they were fishing around 20 or so boats. Of the five fish they averaged each time out they only had one that was legal with the new regs. I see that as 80 fish now released that would have been kept amongst those 20 boats if the catching was similar for them. That is all the influence I need for the slot. It will definitely be different not eating as many meals of walleye, but a great thing for the future of our great lake.

    Hey Nate,
I heard a few anglers complaining about the new regs however most of the guys that fish the Big V all the time, are infavor of them. If anything, it will send all of the meat hunters packing and save some fish for our kids to catch on down the road.

Yes, I do know Joe Panicci, he’s almost as good a fisherman as me!
