We’re likely (HOPEFULLY) experiencing the last OVEN ROASTING weather pattern which is likey going to lay claims to more spooky storms here this evening. As I hastily henpeck this short report we’re hovering around 82 degrees with 90% humidity. Our Barometric pressure is dropping more consistently than I could get my jig to the bottom this morning. Note to self Barometric pressure falling……..GOOD!!

The fish were snapping jigs and shiners this morning as our group of 3 put 50 eyes in the net prior to the Noon Whistle. We pinned a heavy cloud of ciscoes off some rocks, and experienced heartstopping action for 4 straight hours. Beautiful mix of eating fish (14-16.75) with Tank Slots!! Fish were blowing partially digested ciscoes up, and I took time out of the morning onslaught to photograph a freshly caught ciscoe next to my perch H20 Precision jig from BfishN Tackle. http://www.bfishntackle.com That Ciscoe was minutes later laced onto my H20, and never touched bottom before an angry 22 inch black backed Rainy Lake walleye POUNDED my offering!! BOY if a guy could get his hands on some 4 inch frozen ciscoes………

We must have had 10 double and a couple triples!! In this double photo the smaller fish measured 17.5 inches. Fortunately the big and dumb still grace the guides presentation every once in awhile!!

We are SO going to nail the ‘eyes on the Houseboat trip! You’ve got some much cooler weather coming. You’ll need to start doing a water temp count down for us.

For the guys putting together their bait order for the houseboat trip, how many shiners did you go through in 4 hours for 4 people?

Chrs, Have you heard of anyone that has tried redtails up there in the fall? Bring on some cooler weather , and a little wave action.

We ran out of an estimated 3 dozen shiners by about 10:30 a.m., and then we were forced to utilize some smaller fatheads which drastically decreased our catch rate along with size. we had 3 anglers including myself, so with yet another baitsoaker……… fuzzy math would have said another dozen shiners plus some fatheads in a mere 4 hours of fishing. We’ll be utilizing livebait predominately on jigs, but will also be prepared to lace up BfishN tackle plastics if the cool weather gets a grip on us. Those fisherman looking for solic Rainy Lake producers as far as plastics go should look into K-Grubs in the Oyster color along with motor oild, and Ringworms in any silver/opaque color combination or Firecracker/Chart tailed. http://www.bfishntackle.com Remember when it comes to working plastics in deep water it is wise to utilize a 3/8 to 5/16 oz.jig as those Big Kgrubs are very bouyant.

50 fish by noon is an honest VERY good morning of walleye fishing on Rainy Lake from a fishing guides boat. Not the Best ever no doubt, but very solid non-stop action on top of angry fish. This should give anglers a rough estimate of say 8 dozen shiners per 4 man boat with some fatheads or rainbows mixed in on a very good full 8 hour day of fishing. Keep in mind as a guide we fish 8 hour days for a full day. On the Houseboat excursion we may get 10-12 hours of “bait hucking” time.

Here is what I think our boat will be ordering for the trip. Each to their own, and this is only an estimate that noone has exact math on. I think the Rainydaze Houseboat will order 10 dozen shiners, and 4 dozen rainbows per day. With 5 dozen shiners and 2 dozen rainbows for Day 1 which will be a shorter fishing day. This bait will be split between 2 fishing boats of 3 people each giving us on our full day of fishing 5 dozen shiners and 2 dozen rainbows. That is my rough estimate anyway!! Then we might toss in some buffer crawlers or leeches if available. If we’re buzzing through that much bait you’ll likely see some plastics being worked out of the casket.

My crew also will likey be enjoying some quality time burning some Fred Flinstone steaks on the grill and swilling some October Fest!! So for the Dark to Dark guys………I personally wouldn’t want to run out of bait. Remember your likely splitting the bait bill 6 ways on your houseboat.

    Hey Andy

I haven’t………….Hmnnnnnnnnnn If my memory serves me correctly the “Great Oz” himself packed in some redtails last year?? Unfortunately last year as you know was just like August fishing, so not a true pre-fall pattern. Keep this in mind when picking bait size. I pulled out 8 ciscoes from the well today spit up from 14-16.75 inch fish, and the ciscoes measured from 3-6 inches. Our big walleyes out deep are predominately targeting these shiner sided swimming treats. For my $$ I’ll be working shiners for the best forage match, but would certainly NOT rule out Redtails or even small sucker minnows!!

Besides the fact that a guy looking to boat some monster Gators might want some big bait to soak reeftop!! I’m just saying

Oh and Andy……..If those Redtails are turning big fish…….Ya better hide them or sleep with them!!

I tried them last fall. While we did get some of our bigger fish on them the bite was FAR from lights out. With some cooler weather, who knows what to expect. I’m going to buy in 3 or 4 dozen good ones from Thorne Bros… just in case.
