41.5 inches……….Stitch under 21LBS!!!………..and 3 Stitches Monster fish just don’t behave like other fish. Inevitably those freaks of nature will do things that most fish simply aren’t capable of. After boxing this fish in the rear oxygenator getting the camera ready for a “Smile you big Freak!! Your gonna be on IDO” I VERY carefully slid my hand under the unbelievably large gills cautiously not getting into the red gill plates. I slid my Thumb over the head as I always do, and squeezed it firmly which USUALLY will keep a big fish dormant……..USUALLY!! LOL!! The Super Tanker did the dreaded “Croc Roll” similiar to the 20lb fish we iced this year on film, and got a big tooth in my thumb. As we were flat out beating the big fish in the fierce wind there was no chance I was bringing my group in at 11am to visit Dr. Love for just my thumb, so we just wrapped it up. After 5 hours of bleeding like a gut shot deer…….Off to the Dr. with strict orders from the Fishing Queen ready to send out the Coast Guard!! Special thanks to Dr. Stone for waiting around for ole 4 fingers!! Probably won’t be the last visit!! I swear that pike looked like she had eaten a full size Mallard, and was truly a specimen of a fish!! Great day with minor setbacks!! Did make it tough the rest of the day putting the beans to fish without use of a thumb!! Hooksets……….Ouchy Mamma!!

Chris, I got the biggest laugh from the first pic then my son who was looking over my shoulder said: “Holly crap that fish bit off his thumb”

On a serious note: you need to fish bass more and toughen up those digits. Last year, a tooth from a 12 pound pike broke off in my thumb. I need to get a copy of my x rays and post the pic.

    Great fish from Rainydaze again

Ouch…. There’s not much worse than getting stitches in a finger.

    Nice fish BTW.

I don’t get it. I’ve handled a lot of Notherns in my time, a bunch of Muskies in the 40 inch class, and more thana few Bass….no problem. Then I get anywhere near a Walleye and I’m bleeding all over the boat. Stupid Walleye razor sharp gill plates

    Chris:

Glad to see Ol’ Mr. Pike didn’t take off your thumb!!! Isn’t there a notch under the jaw for your thumb to set more safely???

LOL!! If you handle enough monsters you will eventually get cut. Too Big. Too Strong, and too unpredictable. We boated our 45th pike over 10lbs today since May 1st (Compared to 49 pike over 10lbs all of last year). After a tough start to the season with a goofed up Spawn run we have really got things Juiced up in a hurry!! You can bet I slipped on a protective glove for the camera shots on my lone good hand today!!

Oh yeah….That 20lb beast through the ice got me too!! Most “sane” anglers would have risked losing that fish by ripping the leader, but that fish was barely hooked. I wasn’t going to chance losing it.

I also got ripped up by a 19lb 45 inch pike a few years back. This is the first time for stitches though!!

Law of probability is on your side
Our little Mississippi River Peter Pike are better behaved ~ less of course you’re a Bass-man. Then they’re just plain thiefs.

Chris takes another one for the team. OUCH!! I guess you always were a team player, even when you were very young. By the way, “NICE FISH”!! I think that you are going to run out of room on your walls, if you keep mounting these giants. I hope your thumb is feeling somewhat better. I’m sure glad that it wasn’t on your trigger finger.

Fortunately for my Checkbook I’ve decided to simply have 1 representation mount for each fish on Rainy Lake. Currently I have the replica 31.5 Walleye, and then a couple years ago landed a 32.5. Oh well close enough. Then have the Huge Slab Crappie mounts in the cedar branches. 2 Monster Smallies on the way, and now will have a 21lb pike done. Still considering a Muskie mount. Boy the Taxidermist loves me!! Thank Goodness I’ve bartered old school with a great customer of mine. Hoping to get that 162 Class Buck back this September Dad!! Plenty PUMPED!! Hope you and I rock a monster Black Bear with Chad up at Pasha Lake!!
