I’m anxiously awaiting my 1st trip to Rainy lake in August, and am wondering about the smallmouth fishing. I’ve always heard that Rainy has great smallies, but rarely do I see a post about them. Are they difficult to find in mid-summer??Is it better to concentrate on the walleyes?? Of course in a perfect world I’d catch a boatload of both…right??

    Hi Trap,

I rarely get smallmouth trips in July and August. Most of the time the better fish will locate on some of the first rockpiles off shore this time of year. 99% of my trips from mid-June until the End of October focus on Walleyes. With that being said there are some tanks Smallies to be had. Here are a couple inching over the 20 mark a customer and I landed on back to back casts earlier this year.

Thanks Chris…maybe you can point out a few spots when we get together in August.
