The past couple of years I have been exploring the great fishing and camping offered on Rainy. This year we tried something different, instead of going into the park through International Falls we put in at Namangan and got a tow across Kettle Falls. We found the getting a tow very efficient and the cost 40.00 round trip reasonable. Not having a particularly big boat the tow put us into some very nice water diminishing the risk of battling the winds.
Preparing for the trip we got our Remote Boarder passes early, we also got our licenses online. Not having to got through the boarder really saved us a lot of time. From home in the eastern metro to Rainy took less than 6 hours. Sweet gig, we were fishing by 2:00.
We spent most of our time fishing the long deep bays on the Canadian side. Each day we did have to do lot of looking, the water was new to us and the variety of fishing options from bay, to points to reefs sometimes a little intimidating. But each day we did find very willing fish. We experienced one of the most fun bites I have ever had fishing walleyes on the shield. We were fishing a neck down area we knew had fish. With the wind blowing in we started ripping # 5 Raps up on the windblown rocks and just nailed a bunch of nice 20-22 inch walleyes in 5 feet of water or less.
The other days fish were available off points and emerging weeds, they hit both plastics and minnows.
One of the advantages is camping in the park in free. Each site is well maintained with all the amenities making our stay comfortable and relatively inexpensive. As always the advice provided on I.D.A. was spot on (thanks Chris). We had blast with a very remarkable fishery and wonderful natural beauty.
