My brother and I, along with our 8 and 13 year-old daughters fished Memorial weekend out of Kettle Falls area like we do every year, and this one didn’t disappoint. Do you like casting 1/16 oz jigs and ringworms to walleyes in 3-5 feet of water? That’s working! Do you like seeing them on the graph and jigging them in 25 feet of water? That’s working too. Truth is we didn’t really establish a pattern in 3 days of fishing, because everything we tried worked to some extent. The fish are clearly on the move with the early spring, but we still caught walleyes on traditional early May spots and techniques, as well as traditional July stuff. We brought about 8 dozen minnows on the trek from the Ash River access on Kabetogama, up through Namakan and across the boat portage and into Rainy Lake at Kettle Falls, but what worked best were H2O Precision Jigs in various weights depending on the depth being fished paired with ringworms. Best colors were firecracker/charteruse and gold.
