I’m thinking of planning a late March trip to Rainy Lake ice fishing. Just wondering how the walleye/sauger and the crappie bite is that time of year. Any thoughts on fishing patterns or general advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Hey Ryan,

Walleye fishing can be fantastic in late March as the fish begin to stage up for the spawn. Crappie fishing is great on the north side of Rainy Lake, many are fisheries around Rainy lake. By the way……..YOU HAVE MAIL!!

I would dare say the Rainy Lake crappie fishing in March is the best in the midwest. Or at least the best crappie bite I know of. Here’s the vid from a trip I took to Rainy last March.

What’s the situation for big pike on Rainy for late march? I like the near ice out time frame for pike but never have fished canadian border waters for it. Usually i’m fishing the great lakes or mississippi around then.

Late ice can be fantastic for big pike. What I’ve noticed is there is a late push before spawn, and often times people are up too early. We’ve got some of the biggest and baddest pike in the northwoods no doubt!!

Awesome video guys!! Ryan and I hit them like that one day on Red Lake quite a few years ago now…have been DREAMING of a crappie bite like that ever since! It is amazing when you can let a crappie that big go back down the hole and not feel like you have just lost your mind! Hopefully we can see a fraction of the action you guys did when we head up at the end of March! Thanks for the info!!

Hope the gals have fun scrapbooking!! Better yet bring them along. Then they can scrapbook themselves with big fish!!
