Don’t overlook the Big Bronzebacks that lurk on the many shallow rockpiles of Rainy Lake early in the year. The excitement of a good topwater bite makes me lose sleep when those big toads are guarding their beds. Big, Angry and Tough. I look forward to sliding that sparkling skeeter quitely into those bass infested beds!! For the Bass lovers out there Rainy Lake is your DREAM LAKE!! Proceed with Caution or you’ll never want to go home!!

    ABOUT TIME, Chris

    I love that bronze color
I even have Pete talked into a day at the GTG chasing those big smallies that call Rainy home

If I have to give up my lovely smooth skinned babies, bronze is the thing for me. That is one fish that never quits. Great pics.

Thanks Northstar!! I wouldn’t say we overlook the species, but when a fishery like Rainy boasts such quality size classes of Crappies, Walleyes, Pike and Muskies a guy sometimes runs out of time in the day. I’ve found I enjoy catching them all, and each species offers something rather unique that keeps me coming back for more. With Smallmouth it would have to be the angry fights they dish out. That heavy turn sideways that feels like it is going to leave you with broken wrists. The wicked jump and headthrow that gives so much to the visual side of the sport. I’m with you!! I like the “Bronze Toads”
