Stuck indoors recently finishing I’ve witnessed through our windows the pass of the coldest July on record for International Falls. Now this comes off the heals of record snow fall last December. Now personally I don’t have a problem with that, and I’d never trade the 115 degree temps of the south for the 60 degree temps here in the north. With that being said drastically different water temps/levels are having fish locating a bit differently than in years past, but not the bulk of the fisherman . Heck water temps are still hovering in the 62 degree range in many areas….(Note to self…..Valuable info!!) Fish locate by water temps, and baitfish not calendars!! I have been told from various reliable sources that the slabs have continued to bite with limits of nice fish being caught by some. This was a very poor crappie spawning year due to inclimate weather, and Most crappies will absorbe their own spawn making for a poor 2009 year class. Here on Rainy Lake the biggest dilemna is often what to expend your energy chasing. We’ve been focused on numbers of big walleyes, but with the continued reports of slabs this may make us soak some slab producers. This sets up for a great situation this fall as traditionally slabs have stuck around, and will likely create another fantastic combination trip like last year for September-October boating Walleyes and Crappies!! I apologize for this SECOND HAND info, and I assure you I’m a better fisherman than carpenter!! At the same time I’ll tip my hats to all contractors out there Yoy boys have REAL JOBS!! LOL!! Obviously time to get my priorities back in check!! Good Fishing Team!!
