Yesterday while we were fishing Pike-N-Eyes I pulled 56 degrees in a far back bay. That is the warmest surface temp I’ve found, but with temps expecting to get to the mid 70’s and then down to mid 60’s for a week expect those Crappies to be making the Spawning run!! Water levels are similiar to last year which leads me to believe last years spawning grounds may very well be used again this year. I’ll be out in force after my trip today!! Should be a great year chasing those papermouths!!

I will be up to Rainy lake next week on the canadian side near redgut and swell bays. I have never gotten into the crappie. I hear redgut has some spots, but would you be able to be more specific on a location to start looking? Thanks in advance!

I will be out Wednesday and Thursday with a couple buddies from school. Looks like they want to get some slabs so you know where I will be! Thanks for the update on the Water Temp Chris!!

    Bassman,

As far as Crappies go in Redgut, you will want to pursue shallow bays with soft bottoms as they will have the warmer temperatures. Fish around rock piles or the new Pencil Reeds that should be showing up. A slip bobber set at 12-24″ should do the trick. Remember you CANNOT fish in Porter’s Inlet, it doesn’t open till June 14th. so try areas around Perry Straits or the Highlines(pine narrows).

    Hi Bassman,

Crappies are in shallows feeding prior to spawning, so Crappies will locate themselves where food is abundant prior to building nests…. When the spawning cycle starts various submerged vegetations both new and old can hold crappies. I tend to be extremely cautious spelling out specific areas to fish. Information helping anglers gain knowledge when it comes to a new body of water is deemed far different and often times much more valuable long term than sending thousands of anglers to spelled out locations. I’m sure you can understand where I’m coming from. I spend all of my open water crappie fishing time on the American side of Rainy Lake, and expect they are in as I type this. Gotta pull myself away from those pike and eyes for a couple days to find them!!

Not Sure what you mean by “MAP CONSULTATION “…
but the map consultation I got from RD only “cost” me a cooler full of antelope and elk num nums and treats. Best trade I ever made. I know try to “tip over” an extra critter so the borderlands can have pepperoni sticks and spicy cheddar brats, from something besides old whitey tail.

Well I’m not gonna lie to ya!! I’m a fishing guide, and attempt to pay our bills fishing…..But I do love Elk snacks!! LOL!! I’ve been known to barter OLD SCHOOL on occassion!! Mostly when I’m already booked that day, and trying to help out. I’ve been trying very hard to duplicate myself as of late, but having limited success!!

Hey Rangerski isn’t it about time you head back to the Northwoods for a little open water action after beating them up in the winter!! And….Montucky shouldn’t you be skinning something out!! Heck you must have a trip coming up yonder pretty soon!!
