Yep, I went out with Chris today huntin Pike. Sunday it was sunny, clear sky’s and mid to upper 60’s. Monday more of the same! Could it be that I was going to hit the timing just right on the Pike?? Today I woke up to cloudy sky’s but it wasn’t raining as I left to meet Chris. We hit the water and shortly there after the weather started to go South on us. Windy, cool and wet is how I would say the day went. Fish weren’t pounding the baits, but that didn’t stop Chris from attempting to put us on them. He told me to stay with the Perch colors but being a bit hard headed I tried about everything I brought with.

I had a slow day personally, but being back on Rainy made it seem OK. I can’t tell you how much I like that lake, it’s getting into my blood I guess.

That Pike Chris got was a super fatty, I knew it was pretty good when I saw it but when I lifted the net that’s when I noticed the girth.

Thanks for the day Chris, I had a great time despite the conditions. We will do it again!

    Hey G-Dog,

Warmest Water we found yesterday was 50 degrees. Fish have been pretty nuetral. Haven’t used Sluggos as of yet, but would not be suprised if they produce well. I expect the Pike to begin feeding more aggressive very shortly. At this point we really have been coaxing the bites. Looking forward to being afraid to put your hands in the water!! Yes there is no place we’d rather be!!

That would be closer to the truth, at least on Rainy. Maybe you could call it a teenager like Bob Mesikomer used to call em. Monsters are over 25#, at least in my imagination.

Would you mind posting your minimum sizes for “giants” for all species so we can be sure we stay humble when we are proud of our own personal trophies??

I’ll keep that in mind. I think I’ve landed 16 pike over 17lbs in US waters. Only 1 of those fish broke 20lbs. I think I will still consider a 16lb pike a MONSTER!! Humor me huh…

    Chris,
How long (roughly) is a 16# pike from Rainy? How about the 5# size you discuss in your latest fishing report?

    Thanks,
    Bob

    Hey Bob,

I would say on “Average” 40 inches. That fish I caught only was 39 inches, but had a freakish girth. Nice genetics to be a really big fish. The biggest pike in Inches I’ve landes was 46.5 inches and that fish only weighed 19lbs. Then I landed a 43.5 that went 20lbs!! Pike can be funny that way. Today I landed nearly Identical length fish with one going 10lbs and the other skinny as a board going 8lbs. In all honesty I don’t measure 2-5lb fish very often.

    Hi Bob,

Paid a little closer attention to our big fish today in regards to length and weight. We caught a 38 inch pike that went 16.5lbs, 39 inch pike that went 16lbs, 39.5 inch pike that went 17lbs and a 41 inch pike that went 18.5lbs.

Hope that helps!! BTW 30 pike in the Daze Fish Casket today!! I’ll load some pics tonight….Camera getting heavy!!
