I certainly did not want or mean to hurt this fish, she was released and swam off just fine, the picture took less than 30 seconds to take.In the future I will take your advice.

    Nice fish!

Not to take anything away from it, but the vertical, gill hold makes me cringe To all those out there chasing sturgeon for the first time, please, please hold your fish horizontally and support the belly. A fish that size could weigh between 50 and 75 pounds. That’s a lot of stress to put on the gill plates!

Again, no offense to you. Great sturgie!

I’m guessing Larry Bollig didn’t make it to my seminar or read any of the posts on Ido talking about sturgeon/large fish handling.

Now I’m going to guess she wanted to lead in the sturgeon dance!

Yeah, sometimes people with good intentions make a bad call on how and when to make a point. I think this one could have best been handled with a PM stating “hey, in the future…” Hopefully bassbuster has thick skin and he can overlook the way the message was presented because that was one sick sturgeon!

My apologies Mr. BB1. I know better.

When I replied about Larry, I wasn’t thinking about you and your excitement.

So…worms the bait of choice? How deep of water?

Most importantly…did you kiss her before you let her go?

FYI~ The “Sturgeon Dance” is where all the lucky angler can do is follow the rod tip around the boat because the sturgeon always leads!

It’s fun when it happens to you, but it’s halarious to watch someone else being lead around the boat several times. A 62 incher will dance until you have tears in your eyes!

I wasnt sure what the sturgeon dance was, but yes she did take the lead for about 20 minutes. The fish came out of 25 fow on crawlers. The fishing has been slow until today they finally started to go.We will be out on the water in the morn and continue our quest for the 70 incher.

Umm, unless I missed something here, my response was as respectful as I could make it.

Could it have been handled in a PM? Yes, but I think it’s important to get the message out there to all who plan to sturgeon fish.

    No offense to anyone.

Apparently I missed all the excitement!! LOL!! Hey BB!! Like to tie into one of those bruisers this spring!! I DO KNOW that if I do get into one I’ll SUPPORT THE BELLY!! Great fish Kelly, and please keep on sharing!! I’m glad there is a growing emphasis on the well being of the fish, and guarantee everyone Bassbuster is predominately a Catch and Release guy. By no means would he EVER intentionally harm a big beast like that!! So did you have to harpoon that thing to get it boatside?? JUST KIDDING!! PLEASE NO BEAT DOWN FOR ME!! KIDDING…..

    See ya on the RIVER!!

    Kelly,

    Great looking fish.

From the wide open water it looks as if you made the trip down river to Baudette, (is that so).

Great to see you last week in INL Falls, and to talk to you and Larry before you wacked the Pike.

I might see you again in 2 weeks,

    Jack

Yup. the fish are coming into 4 mile bay as I write this, seems to me the big females are coming through the bay now.The only fish we caught were big we also saw other big ones landed. There were a few small ones but not many the run is just begining.Should be real good fishing in the next few weeks. The littlefork river let go yesterday and I woulds suspect the bigfork to go today.
