WOW!! No secret Diamond jigs tipped with imitation maggots from various companies have iced 95% of the freakishly large slabs were chasing this year, but yesterday I got a bit of an eye opener. Had some boys out chasing papermouths and we were doing OK… Had some fish on the ice, and I was drilling to locate the schools of bigger fish. I was movin-n-groovin Daze style. every 6-10 holes I was seeing a big red blob pulsating at about 7 feet of the bottom!! NICE!! I would race down with the Diamond jig only to be SNUBBED!! RUKIDDING ME!! While my customers had small jigging spoons on pounding the big crappies. Now Pride has left me a long time ago, and catching big crappies is definately the goal, yet I stubbornly stayed with what had got me there icing 1 to every 3 of there nice fish. THATS IT!! after a couple huge slabs turned me down cold I knew it was time to go to the tool box. I pulled out my demon spoon in the 1/8 oz size with glow chartruesse and a orange head. I tipped the spoon with a minnow tail, and that was all she wrote. EVERY FISH I SAW CRUSHED ME!! EVERY FISH!! Not only that, but I bounce the ducer in the hole to locate fish lurking on the edges….If you don’t do that hole hopping best give it a shot . Anyway often times you’ll see fish outside the cone, and for those fish with my smaller profile presentation I wasn’t able to draw them in yesterday until I snapped the DEMON!! I would put that Demon spoon down the hole and snap/flutter the jig rising slowly, AND LIGHTS OUT FOR YOU!! Unbelievable!! We KILLED the big fish yesterday with customers hammering the big crappies (I believe 4 are going on the wall) Biggest crappie was 15 1/4 inch and a easy 2lb plus. Always a good idea with groups of anglers to tie up different presentations and spread out. You can locate the big school, and in this case uncover what will trigger them that day. 60 plus crappies hit the ice mid-day yesterday!! Pics to follow soon!! My camera battery is currently taking a well deserved nap/charge from a solid 2 weeks of work!!

    Keepin it real!!

A few years ago we headed out to fish trophy slabs out of what is now “The Fisheries”. Our bait of choice for that outing was 1/4 oz Kastmasters with 4″ shiners. We didn’t know until arriving there was a derby that day and the derby headquarters was where we put in. We entered and proceeded to the spot we had planned on. There were a couple other parties nearby with “crappie” minnows and we got some strange looks when they saw our bait. However our 5 biggest crappies averaged nearly 2 lbs. and easily won the category and $600 in prizes.

There are days when those slabs want small stuff but I don’t believe big fish, regardless of species, survive on a diet of tiny bugs or small stuff. At some point they want meat!!
