Rumor has it that some Rainy Lake guide iced a 16.5″ crappie that weighed 2# 9 oz. Would anyone in this forum happen to know anything about that? Would there happen to be a photo of said beast fish?

LOL!! No rumors here!! As many of you know I’ve made it a mission to crack the 16 inch threshold for a slab this year. This is the second 16 ri-DONK-ulous slab we’ve iced this year. My good buddy Andy digitalized a 16 inch 2lb 4 oz slab a few weeks back. NOT TO BE OUTDONE Yesterday I finally did it!! NEW DAZE PB 16.5 inches on the BEANS!! 2lbs 9oz FREAK!! Proof is in the puddin!! I’ll be doing a full report of how we’ve been catching these humpbacks later on!! Oh… DEAR CUSTOM JIGS AND SPINS, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! Pink Diamond jig with gulp/powerbait maggots!! Oh fish number 2 in the last pic was caught 10 minutes later and measured a puny 15.5 inches and weighed just cracked the 2lb mark also!! IF…. Your not booking your trip for the GIANT Spawn slabs please see a doctor immediately and check you pulse and have them do a sanity scan!! RUKIDDING ME!! Bar is now set at 17 inches, or 3lbs!!
March 22, 2009 at 1:40 am #761098Holy HUGE Crappie!!… … I’ve never seen a crappie that big…uhm..guess I won’t bother mentioning my PB…
March 22, 2009 at 1:42 am #761099Nice PB. It’s beyond super freak!! Thanks for all the pics & reports this year Chris!!! Really enjoyed them all.
inge66Posts: 366March 22, 2009 at 2:45 am #761111Thats awsome Chris……..Wish I could have been there. Was there swiss cheese made of the ice today???? Hard to tell if it was in the same area when we were there. I wish I could make one more run up there.
I bet there is a lot of karaoke being sang tonight!!
Fishin GuruPosts: 78arklite881southPosts: 5660March 22, 2009 at 12:20 pm #761149Thanks Team!! We put a lot of time and effort in zeroing in on the big fish. Don’t think for a second we didn’t stare down thousands of empty holes, and burn more gas through our augers than you do through your SUV getting up here to knock this pattern down. I guess that is one of the things I enjoy most about guiding. Whether it is Big Pike, walleyes, smallies, gils, perch are crappies we do the homework to give you the best chance of getting big fish. It still is chance when fishing though. Unless your shooting them the fish still need to be willing to bite. After we knock out the slabs and pike for a few more weeks we’ll be making a quick transition to the River and ice out monster pike. Can’t really say what I’m more excited for. Gotta love Minnesota as an outdoorsman though. Just when you might get complacent BANG your into another season or bite. I feel fortunate to be up here doin it up Daze style!! Workin it hard and playin it even harder
BassBuster2Posts: 178March 22, 2009 at 1:33 pm #761170Awesome for sure. I was taken out in 1982 onto Saginaw Bay by an older man that I worked with and we caught 12 Crappies that day over 16″ Most were 18+ With 2 just under 20″
I was blown away to say the least. I really wanted to go back with him but he died of Cancer that next spring. Back then Fish were for eating not putting on the wall let alone CPR.arklite881southPosts: 5660March 22, 2009 at 8:53 pm #761263Yep we have giant slabs up here. Many little spots to kick out big pigs. Those spots are getting fewer and farther, but they are still here. Rainy hands down has the biggest baddest slabs around. Not only can you get freakishly long fish, but they are very heavy. Big Round slabs with thick backs!! We DO have 3lb fish make no mistake about that. Now with that being said it is very unrealistic to expect to come up and catch one on your trip, but knowing it is possibly gets me up every morning!!
I have been getting a lot of questions in regards to tackle used for these big slabs as well as how I try locate the biggest and baddest, but since it is somewhat in depth and I’m a bit windy I think I’ll post an article on Winter slabs!! I’ll try put one together tonight!! I would say Ice slabs are second favorite fishing for me behind spawning crappies!! Something about chasing those bruiser Rainy Crappies when they roam thier spawning grounds and are pitch black with gold on the sides!! WOW!! Most beautiful crappies you will ever lay your eyes on!!
March 23, 2009 at 1:34 am #761339Now that is an awesome , sumo , giantious, pig , slab. I knew you would not quit til you nailed one over 16. I was going to be content and put away ice fishing equipment ,but then you had to do it. 17 incher the goal eh? Game on , see you in a few days!
arklite881southPosts: 5660March 23, 2009 at 1:55 am #761350LOL!! Boy if that is all it takes to get you back here…. Heck you know this is a terrible time to put your ice fishing gear away anyway!! Got some tough weather coming in for the next few days Rain, Wind, and snow. NICE!! You can bet we’ll be chasing the 17 incher!! If I were to put my money on someone icing a 17 this winter it would be you!! See ya this weekend!! Look forward to fishing with you again!!
BassmanJoePosts: 7March 23, 2009 at 12:47 pm #761416OK, I actually witnessed this slob(s) hitting the ice. Nice job Chris. This was truely an awesome day of fishing. Don’t kid yourself, this was a lot of work…at least 200 holes, if not more and lots of hole hopping. Lots of fish, not just sumo crappies, but huge white fish (7+ pounder???) and hungry slimers. Anyone wanting to experience a great day of fishing, I would truely recommend hooking up with Chris. He is the first guide I have ever used, and was not disappointed.
Too bad we had to work so hard to get to this spot….oh wait, is that the back of my suburban in one of the pictures on your report?????
GReat time and can’t wait to hook up again…spring slabs???? Lets go.
